Researching temporal changes of land use and land cover from satellite images has been con-ducted in Vietnam several years. However, few studies have been done to consider seriously the re-lationship between land use and land cover changes and the fragmentation of landscape. Hence, this paper aims at systematically analyzing the landscape pattern and the structure of green space of Da Nang city by applying the principles and methods of landscape ecology helps divulging the recipro-cations among anthropogenic factors, the environment and the urban landscape, through which urban landscape planning, optimizing urban landscape and urban planning actions could be efficaciously supported. Based on Landsat Multi-Spectral Scanner, Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus, ASTER satellite images, the support of GIS, RS technology and with fixed appropriate grain, the Multivariate Alteration Detection approach was employed for processing and post-classification change detection, from which major landscape indices were applied by using FRAGSTATS. The re-sults showed that during the whole study period the landscape structure of the greenspace is not rea-sonable:Park greens is the dominant type and road greens and residence greens is obviously less; The SHDI of whole greens is relatively low which means the greens type is monotonous. Results al-so revealed that its landscape is relatively fragile in which new-built districts have higher PD than the old-built ones; The FRAC- MN of this area is low and the patch shape is regular, artificial, lacking natural shapes. Furthermore, the density of corridor is low and the layout of park greens is uneven which cannot satisfy the life of local residents.Further applying the methods of Gradient Analysis and Landscape Index, this paper analyzes the horizontal gradient of the landscape at different extents. As a result,400*600 m is determined as the appropriate range, and with this value, research is carried out to disclosure the space characteristic in some extent as well as the landscape structure of the urban greens pattern in Da Nang city. The study illustrates that in the view of type, different type of greenspace shows obvious space characteristic along belt gradients structure. At downtown, park greenspace is the dominant type, and in the sub-urbs, residence greenspace and affiliated greenspace take more space. As a whole, the urban greens are frail and the shape of greenspace pattern is relatively smooth. In the view of landscape, different landscape indexes present otherness along belt gradients; LSI, SHDI and AI have distinct gradient features while PD is inconspicuous.Moreover, spatial analysis by using landscape metrics marked the evidence of changes in land-scape characteristics with an increase in total number of patches and patch density while the mean patch area was decreased during the period of 30 years. Consequently, the landscape structure of Danang city became more fragmented and heterogeneous. Some suggestions are suggested for greenspace construction to optimize greenspace systems as a whole for Da Nang City.
