Concrete-filled steel tubular(CFST) structure has been widely used in high-rise buildings and bridge piers for its good performance. Structures might be crashed by vehicles or vessels and impact loads may bring permanent deformation to structural members or even destroy them, and hence should be considered in structural design. In recent years, concrete-filled rectangular tube has gained more and more attention from engineers because of its advantage in structure and engineering. This paper has made a study on the dynamic response of concrete filled rectangular tube under lateral impact by using the ABAQUS/Explicit software. The main research works are as follows:Firstly, a finite element analysis(FEA) model was established to simulate CFST on lateral impact. Test data from other researchers were used to verify the accuracy of the FEA model and general good results were achieved. Some simplified model parameters were given, which can make a difference for other researchers.Then the FEA model were used to study the mechanical behaviour of concrete-filled rectangular tubes under lateral impact load, which includes the deformation, impact force, stress and strain development, the energy dissipation capacity and the influences of axial load. The advantage of resistance to deformation of concrete-filled rectangular tube was discovered by comparing the dynamic response of different section members.Thirdly, the influences of main parameters on the impact resistance of concrete-filled rectangular tubes were studied, including the yield strength of steel, concrete strength, steel ration, slenderness, impact velocity, impact section, position of impact and the plasticity of the impact et al. It was shown that the yield strength of steel, steel ration, section diameter and impact velocity the dynamic increase factor of the impact load.Based on the parameter study, a simplified calculation method which combines plastic hinge moving theory, structure destruction theory of quiet plasticity and plasticity dynamics assaults theory’s simplifying analysis method about the dynamic respond of concrete-filled rectangular tube was drawn on the dynamic flexural capacity of concrete-filled rectangular tube section which can be used in the design of concrete-filled rectangular tube members under impact loads.
