| In the era of speeding urbanization, the traditional culture and regional feature of architecture is disappearing, which reveals the prominent contradiction of globalization and the regionalism. However, as the original property of architecture, the regional features are not completely on contrary of globalization. The contemporary architecture can meet the needs of the function of globalization as well as reflect the profound culture of regional architecture. The traditional materials are significant syntax of architectural expression, which become the joint of the building and the culture connotation. Therefore, it is of great significance to focus on traditional materials. Based on western architectural theories, yet trying to introduce a material attitude of Contemporary Chinese architecture, the study of material expression strategy provides a new perspective as well as innovative methods to intervene the architecture design.Based on the Critical Regionalism theory and the Tectonic Culture, by analyzing the traditional features and crafts of regional materials in Lingnan region, the thesis develops several strategies for materials expression from the tectonic expression, the surface expression and the cultural symbol. The Critical Regionalism theory provide the bases for material expression, while the theory of tectonic culture is a theoretical structure for expression study of traditional materials.From the case studies of material applications in regional architecture all over the world, as well as the finished project of contemporary architecture, the author tries to summarizing the their attitude and strategies, tapping the potential of traditional materials in contemporary architecture. At the end of the thesis, the author introduces an architectural practice concerning the traditional materials in Lingnan region, Pointing out that the design strategy of traditional materials should be closely connected to the context and conditions of China. |
