It directly influences not only the security and amenity of car operation but also the outlook. The rotor can save energy up to one and half times as much as non-rotor. Light weight wheel hub will lead the future of car wheels. The paper conducts a hub design using lightweight materials and evaluates the function and economy of wheel hub. Research work is listed as follows:(1) Research on the application of light weight wheel hub both in domestic and overseas study is conducted. Describe in a clear manner the application of a variety of lightweight materials on wheel hub and hub dimension design based on finite element method.(2) Model the hub based on finite element method and makes statics analysis with test load. Modal analysis is made to get natural frequency and mode of vibration.(3) Select light weight material and design the dimension of wheel hub. Analyze mechanics and statics property of wheel hub when the largest deformation occurs to make sure that its physical strength meets the demand.(4) Analyze the performance of hub made of Al and Mg with Solidworks and Radioss software. The results can show that hub of aluminum alloy has advantages that its weight is 2.85 kg less than that made of steel. That’s 23.08 percent of the gross weight. Hub of magnesium alloy is 5.1 kg lighter than steel hub, that’s 41.03 percent less.The paper investigates the impact of light weight wheel hub on motor and battery of electric vehicle. Aluminum alloy hub can reduce motor cost by 29.6 yuan, and battery cost by 3300 yuan. Magnesium alloy hub can decrease motor cost by 43.2 yuan, and battery cost by 7040 yuan.(5) Make a thorough plan based on LCA and 3E method to assess the performance of light weight material in electric vehicle weight reduction in terms of economy, environment protection and energy efficiency.Under the same condition of the driving motor and the power battery of the experimental vehicle, the paper shows that aluminum alloy hub can save cost of 315.9 yuan and energy of 15485 MJ. It is able to cut down CO2 emission by 737.2 kg. Magnesium alloy hub can save total cost of 913.5 yuan and energy of 34096 MJ.
