Faulting, one of the main forms of the disease, has a serious impact on driving comfort and road capacity. To minimize the negative effects of faulting, there is an urgent need to understand the influencing factors of faulting and the law of development, further design optimization method to improve faulting should be determined.Because of the lack of a sufficient amount of station measured and relative climate, design and traffic data in China’s pavement management system, the research was based on US long-term pavement performance database(LTPP) to carry out the law of faulting development and design optimization study in different climate zones. Firstly, weather, traffic, design and faulting data was extracted and faulting data was optimized considering the temporal and spatial characteristics of the faulting development, further the climatic characteristics in different climate zones were summarized using the extracted climate data. Secondly, through literature review, design factors as dowel, slab thickness, base, drainage and slab length were selected for research. Based on the optimized extracted data, pavement sections in each climate zone was set as an analysis group, quantitative analysis of concrete pavement design conditions in different climate zones was conducted, and the influence of different design factors for faulting development in each climate zone was studied as a key point, quantified by two indicators as the average faulting increasing rate and the average value. Finally, concrete pavement design was optimized considering the cost benefit ratio, definition and calculation of benefit were proposed. Two design factors as dowel and slab thickness were studied to determine the design optimization programs with the best benefit-cost ratio in each climate zone when achieving a certain faulting benefit improvement combined with cost data, and further the "benefit-cost-design" design optimization analysis system which has application meaning was summarized. This paper studied the concrete pavement faulting development and design optimization, LTPP faulting data extraction and optimization methods were proposed, and faulting development with design parameters changing was studied creatively, aiming to improve the comprehension of faulting behavior and provide a new idea for design improvement. This study has long term significance for China’s concrete pavement performance improvement, and has important reference value for China’s pavement long-term performance monitoring system.
