A Study On The Concept Of Context In The Architectural Idea Of China Since 1980S

Context, which is already well known in Chinese architecture, however, for past few years, ignoring or abusing context brings up strange or mediocre buildings and this confuses the public.This thesis is about to analyzing the borrowed word context in the history and revolution of Chinese architecture and discussing the impact of neglecting establishing a complete theoretical system of context.This paper is divided into four parts. The first part compares the importing of the Italian word ’ambientali’ into America and ’context’ into China. The second part talks about the origin of the idea’context’in each culture. The third part describes the application of context in China of the three aspects: the visual image, the space experience and the culture ideology. The last part rethinks the appearance of ruins generating context in western culture instead of vanishing in China.The idea of analyzing the evolution of ’context’ in the architecture idea of China comes to the conclusion, which is the borrowed word ’context’ failed to form a theoretical system influencing the current architectural education and design, and the so-called ’strange’ or ’mediocre’ architecture emergence can be attributed to the incomplete interpretation of’site’, failed to consider both space and context at the same time.
