Partially encased concrete composite column is a new structural member, whichpouring concrete between the column wed and flange tips of a shop fabricated H type steel column. Infilling concrete can effectively improve anti-localized buckling capacity of the plates,as well as the flat-rolled steel’s regularly interval restriction effect on concrete, therefore improves the ductility of the columns. In this article,theH-shaped steel partially encased concrete composite columns are referred to as H-shaped steel PEC columns. This paper design an axial compression test with twelve ordinary H-shaped steel PEC short columns in order to study the mechanics properties of this new composite column. The test mainly considers the slenderness ratio, strength of recycled concrete, recycled aggregate substitution rate,flat-rolled steel’s action and other factors etc. so as to reveal the failure modes, failure characteristics and ultimate bearing capacity of theH-shaped steel PEC short columns under the condition of these parameters. The results indicated that steel and concrete can work well together, and the final failure modes of these short columns mainly refers to crushing recycle concrete and flange local buckling occurs between the links. As well, this paper establishes a computational formula basedon ultimate bearing capacity of the PEC short columns, the calculation results are in good agreement with the experime--ntal results. The finite element analysis software named ANSYS is adopted to simulate the monotonic loading performance of the test specimens. The result agrees well withthe test, which verifies the feasibility of the analysis model, and it provides a foundation for further simulation studies.
