After the end of World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union conducted the fierce arms race during the cold war, especially in the field of high and new technologies. By adhering to the principle of "peaceful coexistence", the United States and the Soviet Union strengthened their comprehensive strength in various fields without restoring to force, but as in the "cold" way, they contain each other and promote the superiority of their ideologies to compete for the world hegemony. During the cold war, the Soviet Union launched the first man-made earth satellite, allowing humans to enter the "space age". In that special period, the "space race" between the United States and the Soviet Union not only promoted the development of the space technology, but also posed a profound impact on the development process of their histories, leading to the major changes in political, economic, cultural and other fields of these two countries.Taking Sergei Pavlovich Korolev(Сергей Павлович Королев) who is a scientist in the Soviet Union as the breakthrough point, this paper details the cause, process and results of the “space race” between the United States and the Soviet Union and analyzes the influence of Sergei Pavlovich Korolev’s scientific achievements on the final result of the cold war, on the basis of historical and scientific and technical literature. This paper is divided into three parts: introduction, main body and conclusion. The introduction mainly introduces the main research content, significance and domestic and overseas research status of the selected topic. The main body consists of three chapters:The first chapter illustrates the ballistic missile, rocket, and the scientific research achievements of Korolev who is the chief designer of the manned spacecraft. First, this chapter introduces the historical background and analyzes the reasons combining the theory of international relations and international political theory. Then, from the development of spaceflights, this paper observes the dynamic process of the cold war, details the typical scientific research of Korolev’s team, and contrast the technical parameters of the launch vehicles of the United States and the Soviet Union at the same period. The second chapter introduces the historical background of “SS-2”, the intercontinental ballistic missile "SS-2", and describes the rocket family derived from the intercontinental ballistic missile from three historical stages: the first contact with space, the first manned spaceflight and the first extravehicular activity. The third chapter consists of two parts. Based on related literature and data, the first part analyzes the development of Russian aerospace industry after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Although Russia becomes the biggest succeeding country after the collapse of the Soviet Union, still the collapse has a huge negative impact on the development of the space industry. However, the Russian government has never give up on the construction in the field of space. The second part estimates the future development trend of its space industry through relevant policies and regulations promulgated by the government and strengthened international cooperation. The conclusion summarizes the important role of the scientific research achievements of Korolev during the cold war and the impact on human society of the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union.
