Worldwide, quantit ies of ships have been entered the aging stage, which lead to the decrease of the hull strength. O n the other hand, the world has entered the era of economic globalization in recent years, maritime t rade between countries is becoming more and more frequent, trade volume also showed a trend of increasing year by year. As a means of marit ime transport, ships have large loading capacity but low cost, so ships play an important role in international trade, but only healthy ship can perform a task well. Now ships tend to be large, the structure is more complex. People have increasingly difficult in ships’ control and maintenance, which will lead to ship accidents. Therefore, in order to improve the reliabil ity and safety of ship, it is profoundly significant to research ship structural health monitoring. The first thing to research ship structural health monitoring is determining the method of SHM and the position of stress monitoring. This paper propose a s tress sensor monitoring method based on the rectangular strain rosette, and determine the posit ion of stress monitoring by FEM and ship regulations. This paper’s research object is a 30000 DWT vessel, which has characteristics of many open holes, complex lo ad and so on. Stress concentration is easy to be formed around the opening of the hull, leading to inaccurate result, so the grid should be dealt with better. Analyzing the impact of the accuracy of finite element numerical solution by changing the quality of gr id, grid size, hole types and other factors. Establishing a reasonable finite element model of the whole vessel according to the result of the analys is, and researching all kinds of questions during building the finite element model of the whole vessel. Getting the stress distribut ion of the hull structure through calculation and determining the posit ion of stress monitoring. After running the health monitoring system, determining the stress of the monitoring points by the working condit ion of the ves sel. Then, comparing the calculating stress with the measuring stress from structural health monitoring system, in order to verifying the rationality of the numerical simulation.
