The characteristics of different forms of organic matter in pipe water, including dissolved organic matter(DOM) and Particulate organic matter(POM), is researched. In the study, the POM was analyzed by GC-MS, with microfiltration and ultrasonic extraction. DOM was also analyzed by GC-MS, after C18 solid-phase extraction process. Results indicate that DOM accounts for a considerable proportion of the total organic matter in pipe water. When TOC was used to express express organic matters in pipe water, the proportion of POM was up to 22.7%, and the most of it was in the range of size 0.45~2μm, accounting for 80% proportion of total POM. In the process of water distribution, POM in the range of size >5μm showed a gradual increasing trend.GC-MS result showed that, compared to DOM, the quantity of POM is larger. And in POM, the quantity of organic matters of the size 0.45~2μm is the most. And the quantity of organic matters of the size 0.45~2μm, 2~5μm,>5μm was in descending order. The POMs detected include: Hydrocarbon, alcohol, ketones, ester, organosulfur compound, organonitrogen compound, and benzene and polycyclic heterocyclic. The quantity of POM in different particle size range didn’t show a significant regularity. It can be concluded that the pipe water contains a certain amount of POM. It’s important to research POM.The proportion of POM of size0.45~2μm is the highest, and it’s necessary to study the POM.To sum up, controlling the parameters of particles in drinking water can not only control the turbidity, but also the indicators of organic matter, enhancing the stability of drinking water. In short, the study of this subject will contribute to the further development of drinking water treatment technology, and provide a theoretical basis and guiding foundation for optimal operation of water distribution systems. What’s more, the subject will lay the foundation for the sdudy of safety drinking water distribution and secondary pollution.
