With the rapid development of economy and society in recent years, the rate of urbanization gradually increases. How to increase urban carrying capacity is worth thorough study. Inadequate traffic carrying capacity is one of the reasons for traffic congestion, so building transportation infrastructure and improving traffic management are equally important. In order to improve the efficiency of urban transportation system, the paper makes a study of the pre-signalized systems at signal intersections for the better control at road intersectionsBased on the previous studies, this paper describes the pre-signalized systems and summarizes their purposes, spatial layout and operation mode. With an intersection selected, an investigation was conducted into the behavior of the vehicles changing lanes. From the analysis of the survey data, the behavior of vehicles changing lanes was obtained, which provides the theoretical foundation for the design of pre-signal systems. The study was made mainly of the one single channel pre-signal system design. From the perspective of spatial distribution, the method for setting pre-signal systems is described. Based on the behavior characteristics of changing lanes and the traffic flow theory, the layout of the main signal waiting area and the property layout of the pre-signalized waiting area are determined. The design of signal timing scheme is presented. Based on the theory of traffic management and control, the signal cycle and phase program of the pre-signal system are set. The coordinated design of the main signal and pre-signal is also dealt with. The traffic model of the pre-signal system was built and then simulated by the traffic simulation technology to further study the traffic capacity of the import road. The impact of the four factors on traffic capacity is discussed, which offers guidance in the optimization of the pre-signal system...
