Distribution automation system, as a power automation system that has direct contact with clients, is crucial to keep stability and quality of electricity for users of electricity. In the meantime, with the wide use of micro-grids and electric cars, the regional distribution automation system based on intelligent power distribution room has been being promoted. This system requires the IEC 61850 based communication system in order to make communication connections between different systems. However, many devices that use the non-IEC 61850 protocol are not able to connect to the IEC61850 based system.To solve this problem, this thesis proposes an IEC 61850 communication gateway based on a Linux embedded system, which can make protocol conversions between Modbus and IEC61850. In addition, a prototype for the communication gateway was designed.First of all,the whole frame of the gateway is designed by means of modular design method. Then, a sAddr-based mapping method is suggested according to the message structure of the Modbus protocol and the structure of the IEC 61850 data model. And then, mapping method database is designed using the mapping method, and the main functions of IEC61850 server is detailed in the rest. At last, the gateway prototype is designed based on a Linux embedded operating system and ARM microchips. Then the design detail of the gateway prototype is described, and some main functions of the prototype are tested.
