The high speed of urbanization process has led to population explosion in most Chinese cities. How to make an efficient use of the limited urban space gets more concern. The proper use of underground space provides a good way to relieve the pressure. Now many cities in China has built subway, and much more underground urban space is used for civil air defense, business and storage, More experience in designing and building underground space has been accumulate. This paper is based on the underground commercial street project in Changjiang Road, Tongling City. The deformation and stress state of the soil and support system has been well analyzed with the methods of basic mechanical analysis, reduced-scale model test, and numerical simulation. Main contents and the results of the paper are as follows:(1) The stress state of surrounding soil changes when the soil is being moved away, that’s why soil deformation appears. In this paper the change of stress state of surrounding soil is delicately derived, using the basic theories of elastic mechanics, and also the deformation of surrounding soil is calculate here in this paper. The result of calculation is compared with the monitoring data, and the applicabi lity of using basic theories of elastic mechanics in geotechnical engineering is discussed.(2) The whole process of underground commercial street construction is studied with the method of reduced-scale model test. The pressure beneath the basement was measured. the deformation model of buildings were discussed based on the date measured.(3) FEM method is also used in this paper. Deformation and moment of the supporting system is largely influenced by existing buildings, in the paper this kind of influence is elaborately analyzed with the help of FEM software ABAQUS. The deformation of soil is also well studied.(4) There are usually many shallow-foundation buildings around the area to be built a underground commercial street, in this paper, projects like this are abstracted into several typical working conditions. Each kind of working condition is modeled, calculated and analyzed. The influence of different factors such as the length of supporting system, the width of the cut and the distance between existing buildings and the cut is discussed. It is easier to build a underground commercial street with the method of open cut, compared with other underground projects. That may be a reason why we can see more underground commercial streets than others. In thi s paper, the influence of existing buildings to supporting system is well analyzed, providing a reference to similar constructions.
