Damper is an important damping component in automotive suspension system, and its performance influences the matching quality of suspension system, So study on damper characteristics is one of the key points, As the shock absorber is one of the most non-linear and complex elements, In order to reduce the cost and time of prototype experiment, it is crucial to predict the damper characteristics precisely during design period.In this paper study on double tube hydraulic damper of car is carried out first, the mathematical models of damper has been built according to the fluid dynamics after analysis of internal structure. The influence of valve plate deformation is taken into account. Valve plate deformation is calculated by finite element method ,the relation equations between valve plate deformation and pressure is obtained,which are applied in simulation of damper characteristics. The damper characteristics graphs are obtained by the programme according to the mathematical model. The influence on damper characteristics from the structural parameters are also analysed.Then, the study on an new structure hydraulic damper is carried out with emphasis. The model is assembled in 3d-CAD software virtually. Based on the analysis of working principle and valve structures.The mathematical models of new structure damper is built according to the fluid dynamics. The simulation model is established in MATLAB/Simulink, The new structure hydraulic damper characteristic graphs are obtained, which is compared to the test results. The comparison shows the mathematical models of this damper is correct. The influence on damping characteristics from the structural parameters are also analysed. especially the mechanism of distortion phenomenon which is occurred in test graph is discussed in details. The reason and improving method is concluded.At last the finite element analysis to the working cylinder is done by ANSYS. The maximum deformation and stress are obtained. The results validate the rationality of assumptions used in the the mathematical models.
