Inductive contactless power transfer (ICPT) is a new concept of power transfer based on inductive coupling theory. Compared to traditional power transfer, the ICPT system has many advantages, such as high security, no need of conductor, gas tightness, waterproofness, unmanned management and so on. The ICPT technique can be applied in area of aerospace, transportation, medical equipment, robot, lighting, portable electronic products, coal mining and underwater power supply. It has been a research hotspot in field of power transfer.According to lots of research technique documents, the developing progress and the research state of inductive contactless power transfer technique are introduced. And the fundamental principle and challenge of designing of the ICPT is analyzed. Moreover, the key component --- separable transformer’s equivalent circuit is settled, then, the structure, material choosing and method of electric parameter’s definition of the separable transformer are analyzed.Based on theory analysis, the hardware circuit of the whole system is designed, and a stable prototype of the system is developed. There are several parts in the hardware circuit, including main, driver, control, sampling and protection circuits. In order to enhance the efficiency, suppress the EMI and ensure the security of the system, many techniques are used, there are high frequency inverter technique, resonant compensative technique, soft-switching technique and optic-isolation technique. The efficiency of the designed system can be up to 88%, which is verified by the experimental prototype.Additionally, a phase-shift control method is employed to control the power flow of the system. A function expression of output power with respect to the phase-shift angular is given. And this power flow control method is verified by the experimental results. At last, a conclusion and some future research directions of this research work are presented.
