With the continuous development of space technology and requirements, satellite payloads increase the sensitivity of the impact and pollution. As the earliest and most widely used hold-on release device in satellite rocket separation aspect, pyrotechnic devices would have a great shock on releasing when it is in motion, resulting in releasing gas with chemical contamination after the explos ion. These disadvantages make pyrotechnic devices cannot meet the requirement of the satel ite rocket separation.Funded by C hina Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation innovation foundation, in the application background of the satellite rocket connection and release, this paper based on vortex coil spring winding self- locking principle to develop a low shock, large load, reusable non-pyrotechnic device.Firstly, the concept that based on vortex coil spring winding around a segmented nut to fasten the internal load was presented. The principle of the vortex volume spring winding self- locking principle is analyzed on the application. The friction self- locking mathematical model is set up and the vortex coil spring winding self- locking conditions were got. The effectiveness of the principle of lock was verified. Based on this, hold-on release device structure design was advanced and the preliminary 3D structure design was completed.The lock and release performance of the hold-on release device were analyzed. The vortex coil spring layer number of twisting and bearing force were determined and the simulation analysis was carried on. Inner ring outer replacing compensation algorithm was put forward, and the vortex coil spring radial expansion was analyzed. The vortex coil spring torque-angle corresponding relation was obtained through the experiment. Different stages of the release time were solved and the whole release time was obtained.Using ANSYS, we completed the statics and vibration characteristic analysis for the key components of the hold-on release device in the locked state and the strength and stiffness of device were verified to meet the requirements; by using CAE software ADAMS, dynamics simulation analysis was carried out on the device to the release process. We obtained each release stage simulation curve and verified the driving force, the release time of the device meet the requirements.We developed the hold-on release device and test engineering prototype tooling. And ground testing of the hold-on release device was completed including release voltage test, bolt pre-tightening force test, release process and release time test, high and low temperature storage capacity test and vibration environment test. The results showed that the hold-on release device has many advantages including small volume, light quality, matching the arrow on the power, short release time, large bearing capacity, high and low temperature resistance and good ant- vibration performance. It had important engineering significance.
