The Kalmia latifolia L., the family Ericaceae,is a native evergreen shruband endemic plant in eastern North America. It has many huge advantagessuch as evergreen,cold-resistant,strong adaptability, beautiful tree shape, variedflower color,eye-catching flowers and high economic and ornamental value.Toenrich the variety resources of wood-plants and promote the process ofresearch and industrialization of flowers in Guizhou province, the authorintroduces multiple mountain laurel varieties from the Florida for the firsttime. Breeding cultivation techniques and adaptability of these varieties arestudied in Guizhou Province so as to provide technique support for themountain laurel’s planting and popularization in Guizhou Province and eventhe whole country. The mountain laurel seeds from America, cutting slips andtissue culture seedlings were chosen as the tested materials in this article. Some important results are obtained by carrying out tests of sowing andseedling, cutting propagation and tissue culture of the mountain laurel. Resultsare as follows.Sowing and seedling tests showed that When pH was five, maximalgermination rate of seeds was90%in a mixture of humus and perlite (volumeratio4:1)as plantin substrate. There are four different planting substrates,whichisM1(humus:peat soil:perlite=1:1:1), M2(humus:perlite=2:1),M3(humus:peatsoil=2:1),M4(humus:perlite=4:1). The mountain laurel seedlings’ transplantingsurvival ratio was51%,96%,72%,93%in four different planting substrates. The maximal survival ratio was96%in M2.Cutting propagation tests showed that the average rooting rate was only5%.The roots of cuttings that were treated with the powdery reagent(Hormones2,2000mg/L) develop well. The cutting seedlings’ transplantingsurvival ratio was75%,annual net growth of height of seedlings was only1.17cm,seedlings grew slowly and presented “slow quick slow” rhythm.Tissue culture and secondary transplanting tests showed that averagesurvival ratio of tissue culture seedlings from abroad was13.4%(pseudoalive),33%(pseudo alive) and60%in2012(the first time),2012(the secondtime) and2013(the third time).Secondary transplanting survival ratio ofseedlings were77%and annual net growth of height of seedlings was7.98cm.It showed that seedlings grew quickly.Seed germinating rate of the mountain laurel and transplanting survivalratio of seedlings were both at the high level and seedlings of the mountainlaurel could grow normally in Guizhou province. These results show that themountain laurel can be cultivated with sowing and seedling technique inGuizhou province.According to the growth status of the tissue culture seedlings fromabroad, four tissue culture varieties were screened as suitable cultivar inGuizhou province based on rate of survival and the final rate ofsurvival, which were①Tinkerbell,②Little lina,③Tarbu,④Snawdrift.
