Styrax tonkinensis is one of the most important tree species for constructing bio-energyforests and greening the environment. It is also an ideal species for construction of short cycleindustrial raw material forests in the southern part of China. This paper systematically studied theeffects of medium formulation and container sizes on seedling quality of Styrax tonkinensis. The peat, vermiculite and nursery soil mixed in different proportions and the plastic containers indifferent sizes were used as experimental materials. A two-way randomized block design waschosen in this experiment. Through the analysis of morphological indexes including seedlingheight, diameter, root parameters and biomass and some physiological indexes, the effect ofmatrix composition and container size on container seedling quality of Styrax tonkinensis and therelationship between seedling growth and nutrient content was investigated. The mediumformulation and container size for facilitating the growth of Styrax tonkinensis was optimized. The main results were shown as follows.1. The paper analyzed the impact of substrate composition, container size and theirinteraction on the quality of Styrax tonkinensis seedlings. The results showed that container sizeplayed a significant role in the morphological indexes of Styrax tonkinensis, while the effect ofmedium formulation on the physiological indexes of Styrax tonkinensis was significantly higherthan that of the container size. The interaction of medium formulation and container size affecteda few morphological index significantly and most physiological index.2. The morphological and physiological indices of seedling were analyzed comprehensively. The results of experiments showed that seedlings grew well in18cm×16cm size polyethyleneplastic containers with60%peat+40%vermiculite (i.e., peat: vermiculite=3:2). This conditionwas the most suitable for cultivation of container seedlings of Styrax tonkinensis. In order to savecost and make seedling production easy, A formulation of66.7%nursery soil+20%peat+13.3%vermiculite (nursery soil: peat:vermiclite=10:3:2) can also be applied as a growing medium. Thisconclusion was obtained by considering medium formulation, container sizes, economic andapplicable principle.3. The analysis of nutrition in Styrax tonkinensis seedlings showed that the total N, P and Kconsumption was less and had little impact on the seedlings. According to the prediction analysisof nutrient source and structure in Styrax tonkinensis container seedlings, three results werefound. Firstly, seed nutrient content of Styrax tonkinensis should be concerned. Then the quantityand type of nutrient in the matrix should be considered, finally the ways of cultivation and theapplication of fertilizer in the process of container seedling production should be taken intoaccount. These three factors were the important aspects of container seedling in the tropicstructure and source.
