Liquidambar formosana Hance, widely distributed in plain and hilly area in the south zone of the Yellow River, is one of the quick-growing trees of strong adaptability, also is a pioneer species in succession of mountain secondary forest, and has good ornamental value in landscape. So, the seedling of L. formosana Hance has broad application prospect in afforestation in the southern mountain.Aiming at the bepuzzlement in cultivation of L. formosana container seedling, such as selection and substitution of seedling substrate, control of seedling density and quality evaluation of nursery seedlings, the effect of15seedling substrates and4densities on the seedlings growth were studied, and the growth rule of seedlings and quality of nursery seedlings were analyzed in this paper. The results are following:1. The height, ground-diameter, mass and quality index of seedlings are significant difference within different substrate formulas. The quality of nursery seedlings are rised with the increasing proportion of peat. The No.5substrate formula [peat soil (0.60)+perlite (0.40)] and No.7substrate formula [peat soil (0.46)+perlite (0.27)+rice husk (0.27)] were considered the best, according to the multi-objective comprehensive evaluation on physical and chemical properties of substrate, container seedling quality and production cost.2. Comprehensive considered the indices of the height, ground-diameter, rito of height to ground-diameter, mass and qualified seedlings, the best density of container seedling is280stem/m2.3. The container seed ling of L. formosana grows from mid-March to mid-November, with best height of36.64cm and best ground-dia. of3.56mm. the growth rule of height and ground-dia. are all of slow-fast-slow. The grand period of height growth is Jul.16to Sept.15, the growth amount of26.66cm in this period, which account for72.76%of total amount of height. The grand period of ground-dia. growth is Jul.16to Oct.15, the growth amount of2.31mm in this period, which account for64.89%of total amount of ground-dia.4. The quality of L. formosana can be evaluated using crucial indexes, secondary indexes and auxiliary indexes by means of comprehensive evaluation. The crucial indexes include fresh weight, seedling quality and ground-diameter. The secondary indexes are physiological, including soluble sugar content, root vigor and total nitrogen content. The auxiliary indexes include dry weight, rates of height to diameter and crown to root.
