Peach gummosis is a common disease occurred in almost all peach-producing areas, particularly in high temperature and rainy ones. Generally, peach gummosis refers to physiological gummosis and pathological gummosis. Physiological gummosis is usually caused by wounds, extensive management or stress and other factors, while pathological gummosis is thought to be caused by Botryosphaeria spp.Peach gummosis could result in the nutrient loss, growth weakening and branch death of the plants thus lead to plant growth reduction, low yield and poor fruit quality.Three peach cultivars, namely, ‘Qingfeng’, ‘Shuguang’ and‘Spring Snow’were used in the present study, pot and field experiments were conducted to study the effect of spraying herbicide on the physiological and biochemical metabolism of peach fresh root and relationship between herbicide and peach gummosis; Besides,one-year old shoots of ‘Spring Snow’ were inoculated with pathogen in vitro to study the effect of different concentrations of copper sulfate on peach gummosis. The main results are summarized as follows:1. The effect of herbicide on peach gummosis was studied by spraying herbicide to potted peach trees and field ones. There was a difference between the herbicide treatment and control on the number of peach gum points in single plant, meanwhile the number of peach gum points increased over time but remained unchanged in August and September.2. The effect of herbicide on the physiological and biochemical metabolism of peach fresh root was investigated. There was difference between herbicide treatment and control on MDA content, but no difference was found between the herbicide treatment and control on SOD activity and POD activity, besides, there was no difference between herbicide treatment and control on protein content in ‘Qingfeng’,and however, difference was found on protein content in ‘ Shuguang ’ between herbicide treatment and control.3. Copper sulfate was sprayed on fresh shoot of ‘Spring Snow’ inoculated with pathogen. The study showed that copper sulfate inhibited the growth of fungi, andeased the occurrence and development of peach gummosis. There was no incidence and spots on the shoot of plants in inoculated without pathogen, significant differences were observed between control copper sulfate treatments, besides. There was a more effective inhibition on the growth of fungi in shoots treated with 5m M of copper sulfate than that of other concentration, and 5m M of copper sulfate significantly reduced the lesion diameter.
