Orius similis Zheng(Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) is an important predatory natural enemy with high adapt ability and a broad diet menu. As an independent biological control agent in the south of China, O.similis is wildly used in the major regions of agriculture. This article mainly focused on the key problem in mass rearing of O.similis. The nutrition components and the ration of components should be concerned for the main questions of the artificial diets. At the same time, the selection for artificial diet model for satisfying the characteristics of piercing-sucking mouthparts of O.similis should be taken into account and as a key point.Considering all of the above problems, the present study evaluated different recipe of artificial diet and screened the most suitable recipe for the growth and development of O.similis. This study investigated the development and survival rate of O.similis raised by the most suitable recipe and their natural host aphis gossypii. The survival rate of O.similis rasied by artificial diet with different nutrition additive and other alternative prey were investigated under different temperature conditions. The present study aims to find an ideal artificial diet that can be used in the mass rearing of O.similis. The results of the present study were listed as follows:The components of the optimum recipe in this experiment and their content(mass percent) are as follows: yolk, 35%; housefly maggots, 25%; yeast extract, 6%; sugar, 14%; honey, 17.5%; agar, 2%; potassium sorbate 0.5%. Mix these materials into a semisolid artificial diet. The O.similis was fed on this semisolid artificial diet for two generations continuously using aphids as the control. The development period of O.similis were investigated. The result showed that the development period of O.similis raised by semisolid artificial diet was 1-2d longer than that of the control, but the survival rate of nymphs and the getting ratio of adults were both above 90% and had no significant differences with the control. The reproductive characteristics of adults also had no significant differences with the control. Therefore, the semisolid artificial can basically be sufficient for the development and reproduction of O.similis, but the population density should be controlled in a reasonable level. The survival rate of O.similis adult was evaluated in different temperatures with different diets as nutritional supplements. The result showed that with Lipaphis erysimi as nutritional supplements, the survival rate of adults at 4°C and in outdoor natural low temperatures were both above 90% and had no significant differences with the temperature 8°C. The survival rate of adults had a significant difference between L.erysimi as nutritional supplements and the semisolid artificial diet as nutritional supplements both at 4°C and 8°C.Orius similis was fed on Lipaphis erysimi and Corcyra cephalonica eggs respectively for two generations continuously using aphids as the control. Developmental characteristics of nymphs and reproductive characteristics of adults were investigated. The result showed that the survival ratio of nymphs and the getting ratio of adults had no significant differences with the control. The developmental period of nymphs had significant differences with the control in second generation. The reproductive characteristics of O.similis adults had significant differences with the control, the preoviposition of adults was longer than control, oviposition amount of adults was lower than control, but life span of adults had no significant differences in two generation.
