As the increasing focus on Chinese medicine culture and need for better and healthier life style, the construction of medicinal botanical garden is getting more and more attention. In addition, with the growing public interest on Chinese medicine and herbal, the need for exploring design theory on medicinal botanical garden is obviously growing.Based on her organization and study of thesis’s and articals related to medicinal botanical garden, the author summarizes embryonic system of both Western and Eastern Medicinal Botanical Garden, including the prototype period, the development period, and the boom period, and specifies related conception and classifications on medicinal botanical garden.In addition, the author conducted field research on some representative Botanic Gardens in China, taking photographs, observations and asking for more info, obtaining first-hand information on the site. Afterward, the author summarizes features like roads, terrain, water and plant configuration, and combines it with experiences of constructing Medicinal Botanical Garden, comes out with a summary on the advantages and disadvantages of current cases. In addition, she points out the planning and design differences of medicinal garden and that of other, thus deduces universal principles and methods of designing Medicinal Botanical Garden, in the aims of exploring the planning and design elements and patterns of that particular field.The author also distributed a questionnaire to landscape design and professional practitioners, of which the questionnaire results to a conclusion related to medicinal garden on aspects of public awareness, costume satisfaction, and medicinal garden design, and of which offers references on issues for Medicinal Botanical Garden planning and design.At the mean time, by offering a case study on project of Theoretical Beijing Shennong Valley Botanic Garden planning and design, the paper explores the practical application of all the theories it concludes.
