The genus Ostrinia(Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is economically significant in agriculture with 21 species in the world and 16 species in China, most of them have a wide range of host plants. Host plants have important impact on the generation of genus Ostrinia including population distribution and food sources. It‘s meaningful for integrated pest management to research the chemical communication mechanism between the Asian corn borer(ACB), Ostrinia furnacalis and their host plants. The objectives of our work were: to research the variation of stable carbon isotope of ACB feeding on different host plants; to monitor the dynamics of population of ACB and the host plants of them; to research the impact of the volatiles of three host plants on the host location and oviposition of ACB. The host plants of the genus Ostrinia and the species of the insects which are similar with the genus Ostrinia in morphology. The main results are as follows. The δ13C values of wings of ACB is similar to the δ13C values of the host plant; There was no significant difference of table carbon isotope ratios δ13C of the wings of female and male ACB feeding on different host plants; Different plant growing in different areas with different ability of carbon fractionation had significant difference in stable carbon isotope ratios δ13C, so did it reflect in its consumers. We also studied the variation of stable carbon isotope ratios δ13C of ACB feeding on 33 species common host plants, with the δ13C values we built the map of stable carbon isotope ratios δ13C of ACB feeding on different host plants which could be used to confirm the special host plants of ACB captured in the field approximately. Our study showed that the proportion of overwintering generation of ACB feeding on C3 host plants ranged from 2.29% to 27.81%, C4 host plants ranged from 72.19% to 97.71% in Shenyang of Liaoning, Gongzhuling of Jinlin, Qiqihar of Heilongjiang, respectively; The proportion of the first generation of ACB feeding on C3 host plants ranged from 0 to 4.82%, C4 host plants ranged from 95.18% to 100%, the proportion of the first generation larvae of ACB in Baicheng of Jilin and Zhaodong of Heilongjiang feeding on C3 host plants was 2.00% and 0, C4 host plants was 98% and 100% respectivly. There was no significant differences between the overwintering generation and the first generation in different regions(P=0.0743,P=0.2375). There was significant difference of the proportion of overwintering generation and the first generation of ACB feeding on C3 host plants in in Gongzhuling in 2013 and Shanyang in 2014(P=0.0009,P=0.0045), the proportions of overwintering generation from C3 host plants were higher than C4. The proportion of overwintering generation of ACB feeding on no-corn host plants was less, and there was marked difference between different regions; the proportion of the first generation of ACB feeding on no-corn host plants was very few, and there was no marked difference between different regions. The study provides the basis for forecasting the population dynamics of ACB accurately and the refuse of non-corn host plants for target insect pest resistance management of transgenic Bt corn.Gas chromatography-electroantennography(GC-EAD) of female and male O. furnacalis revealed totally sixteen electrophysiologically active volatile compounds from three wild host plants. Choice-tests for oviposition in the laboratory were conducted with the adults with active compounds identified from these 3 wild host plants, there were no significant different among different volatile compounds compared with CK. 16 plant volatiles were evaluated in the field in 2014. There was synergetic effects of between ocimene, benzaldehyde and sex pheromone lure of ACB respectively The sex pheromone lure traps captured more male ACB with ocimene diluted 1000-fold with hexane compared with CK(P<0.05), the same with benzaldehyde diluted 1000-fold, just the opposite with linalool, azulene, limonene, α-farnesene diluted 1000-fold respectively.Three species of genus of Ostrinia including O. zealis, O. orientalis, O. scapulalis were identified, the host plants of the larve of O. zealis, O. orientalis were C3 plants, O. scapulalis were C3 and C4 plants; Sitochroa verticalis, Pleuroptya ruralis, Circobotys heterogenalis are similar with ACB in morphology, all of which belong to Crambidae family, the host plants of the larve of C. heterogenalis and S. verticalis were C3 and C4 plants, P. ruralis were C3 plants.
