| Termites are one of the oldest social insects, with primitive form and simple metamorphosis, causing incalculable loss to humans. For a long time, the termites bait system is gradually becoming the ideal alternative, since the continuous use of chemicals showed many drawbacks. This dissertation is studying the bait effect of the pine wood powder, which is infected with brown rot fungi, on Formaosan subterranean termites(Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki).There are three main parts of this research:(1) Testing the attraction of infected pine wood powder to Formosan subterranean termites. Within the proper range of corrosion rate (12%～15%), the termites showed a significant preference to the infected pine wood powder. When the corrosion rate was over 30%, the termites didn’t have the preference, even sometimes had aversion.(2) The component analysis of infected pine wood powder. Compared with uninfected pine wood powder (CK), the contents of infected pine wood powder’ components, holocellulose, cellulose and hemicellulose, deceased significantly as corrosion rate increased, whilst the content of lignin increased. This result confirmed the specific effect of brown-rot fungi on the degradation of lignocellulose.(3) Lethal effect of the ivermectin bait on Formosan subterranean termites. Ivermectin bait had slow but strong toxic effect on the termites. Continuously fed with B1% of invernectin bait only,100% of the termites were dead after 13 days. The result was similar when termites were fed with ivermectin and clean bait in the same time, as the termites had a strong preference to ivernectin bait.In summary, these results suggested that we could mix 1%～4% of the brown rot fungi with pine wood powder for 3 weeks. When the corrosion rate was between 12% ～15%, the mixed bait would have an ideal attractant effect on Formosan subterranean termites. After that, mixed with ivermectin to a B1% concentration, the toxic bait would become more effective. |
