The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of superfine grinding andfermentation on promoting the immune function of Gynostemma. Three hundred and fiftymice were assigned randomly into seven groups, fifty mice of each. Group NS was thecontrol group, receiving0.4ml normal saline. Group D1, Group Z1and Group G1werethe control group with general drug, and mice of these three groups were drenchedrespectively with general Gynostemma decoction at the dose of0.2ml,0.4ml, and0.6ml.Mice of Group D2, Group Z2and Group G2were drenched with superfine and fermentedGynostemma at the dose of0.2ml,0.4ml,0.6ml.In order to study the the effects of superfine grinding and fermentation on promotingthe immune function of Gynostemma in immunosuppressive mice, four hundred mice wereassigned randomly into eight groups, fifty mice of each. One of these groups is the controlgroup, and mice in this group were drenched with0.4ml normal saline. Mice models in theother seven groups were established by intraperitoneal injection of hydrocortisone (Hy).Group (NS+Hy) is the control group of immunosuppressive mice, receiving0.4ml normalsaline. Group (D1+Hy),(Z1+Hy),(G1+Hy) were the control groups with general herbal,and mice of these three groups were drenched respectively with general Gynostemmadecoction at the dose of0.2ml,0.4ml, and0.6ml. Mice of Group D2, Group Z2and GroupG2were drenched with superfine and fermented Gynostemma at the dose of0.2ml,0.4ml,0.6ml.All groups of mice were administered with Gynostemma by oral gavage for six dayscnsecutively. The thymus and spleen indices, the total number of peripheral leukocytes, theneutrophil counts, the clearance rate of charcoal particles, the NK cell activity, the functionof Antibody function cell, the level of serum hemolysin, change of the left foot plantarthickness and CD4+/CD8+T cell ratio in serum of each group were observed.The results indicated that in the groups of normal mice, the superfine and fermentedGynostemma of high dose was superior to others and could significantly increase theindex of immune organs, the neutrophil counts and the NK cell activity(P﹤0.01).But the superfine and fermented Gynostemma of high dose had higher effect than others being ableto promote the the total number of peripheral leukocytes, the clearance rate of charcoalparticles, the function of Antibody function cell, the level of serum hemolysin, change ofthe left foot plantar thickness and the CD4+/CD8+T cell ratio in serum, except that thegeneral Gynostemma decoction of middle dose have the similar effect. In the groups ofimmunosuppressive mice, the superfine and fermented Gynostemma of three doses havesignificant influence than the normal saline, and could enhance the above every immunefunctions. All tesults indicated that superfine grinding and fermentation could promote thethe immune function of Gynostemmapentaphyllum.
