Objective The 30 strains of Salvia plants’ growth, development and active ingredient content have been compared, so that the high yield and quality Salvia miltiorrhiza will be selected.Methods Root propagation of Salvia miltiorrhiza in different strains was carried out and the growth,development,yield,active ingredients and other indicators of Salvia miltiorrhiza were observed and detemined.The determination method of the contents such as rosmarinic acid,salvianolic acid B,tanshinone ⅡA,tanshinone I and cryptotanshinone is HPLC. Variance analysis,principal component analysis and correlation analysis are used by the statistical method.Results No. 20 strain’s aboveground vegetative organs are stronger than other strains and No. 26 strain plants’ root length, root number, root fresh weight were significantly higher than other strains;No. 9 strain’s content of tanshinone II A and cryptotanshinone in roots is highest, No. 10 strain’s content of salvianolic acid B in roots is highest, No. 26 strain’s content of tanshinone I and rosmarinic acid in roots is highest, No. 24, strain’s content of salvianolic acid B in stems and flowers is highest and No. 20 strain’s content of salvianolic acid B and rosmarinic acid in leaves is highest.Conclusion The yield of No.26 strain is the highest one among 30 strains of Salvia miltiorrhiza,the content of rosmarinic acid and tanshinone I is highestone among 30 strains of Salvia miltiorrhiza and the content of salvianolic acid B,tanshinone ⅡA and cryptotanshinone belong to the high group. In conclusion No.26 strain can be used as excellent strain for breeding and further research.
