Medicinal herb coptis is the dry rhizome derived from Coptis chinensis Franch., or Coptis deltoidea C. Y. Cheng et Hsiao, or Coptis teeta Wall., corresponding to these three sources, there formed three medicinal coptis called ‘Weilian’,’Yalian’,’Yunlian’. Coptis was first recorded in Shen Nong’s Herbal Classic as a top-grade rare medicinal material for over two thousand years, with effects of clearing heat and expelling dampness, purging fire and removing toxin. According to incomplete statistics, 32000 prescriptions from 13 ancient recipe books before Song dynasty includes 1760 prescriptions containing coptidis, accounting for about 5%. The fact that while wild rhizoma coptidis resources are getting depleted due to excessive excavations, the increasing international application of natural medicine has caused much greater demands of rhizoma coptidis, has drawn special public attention of rhizoma coptidis. In the past, the researches about coptis mostly focus on chemical constituents, pharmacological effects, etc., but lessly on chinese material medical(CMM) regionalization. In addition, previous studies of CMM have long stayed relying on traditional experience, single climate factor and single origin to conduct simple qualitative and quantitative analysis with low efficiency, poor accuracy. However, the development of 3S(RS、GIS、GPS) technology and the ecological niche model theory in recent years have already provided advanced means for CMM.This paper adopted high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) method to determine the contents of seven kinds of alkaloids s from rhizoma coptidis, and grouped the provinces according to contents of single alkaloid component and total alkaloids components, and then by statistical analysis, the optimal Coptis chinensis regions were preliminarily estimated in Hubei Enshi, Lichuan, Chongqing and other places. Meanwhlie, under the guidance of ecological niche model theory, this research used the maxent to study the adaptability of Coptis chinensis, and made a classification combining the theory of statistical knowledge with Arc GIS software outputting growth suitability grades figure of Coptis. The results indicated habitat suitability range of [0,1]. Areas, whose value above 0.7798 were decided as the optimum growth areas of rhizoma coptidis, including Hubei Enshi, Lichuan, Shizhu of Chongqing, and Kaixian, etc.Since ecological factors often affect the accumulation of effective components, in our research, not only was the CMM studied by the maxent, but the correlation between the main ecological factors and the quality of the rhizoma coptidis. The relationship between total alkaloid composition and the ecological factors was elucidated, and such factors as isothermal, precipitation in February and September, isothermality were selected as quality hierarchy elements, whose influences on quality were analyzed by Arc GIS software, laying out images about classification of each factor and level stacking charts and the final quality regionalization of coptidis.
