Soil is an important resource for human and it is the basis of agriculture. Soil classification is the foundation of soil investigation, which can reflect level of soil sciences. The unique climate and geological geomorp Hology of Jilin Province determines the uniqueness and diversity of the spatial distribution of soil types. According to the wild investigation and laboratory analysis, Keys to Chinese Soil Taxonomy(3rd edition) and Criteria for Establishment of Soil Family and Soil Series in Chinese Soil Taxonomy, the diagnostic horizons and diagnostic characteristics were decided for the 27 typical profiles. Based on the selected diagnostic horizons and diagnostic characteristics, the 27 typical soil profiles were divided into higher categories and basic categories for soil classification, and new soil series were built. The conclusion of this study are listed below:1.The obvious differences of climate and geological geomorp Hology from east to west of Jilin Province caused the different distribution of soil types in Jilin Province. Udic Cambosols and Albi-Boric Argosols are common soil types in eastern Jilin Province, and only a few Udic Isohunosols and Alluvic Primosols can be found in this area. In the middle of Jilin Province, Udic Isohunosols are the main soil types; Boric Argosols and Alluvic Primosols distributed sporadically. Ustic Isohunosols, Halosols and Ustic Cambosols mainly distribute in western Jilin Province, and Sandic Primosols can be seen in some places in this area.2. According to the diagnostic horizons and diagnostic characteristics for the 27 typical soil profiles selected out from Keys to Chinese Soil Taxonomy(3rd edition), 3 diagnostic horizons, 6 diagnostic subsurface horizons and 8 diagnostic characteristics were determined.3. According to Keys to Chinese Soil Taxonomy(3rd edition), the higher categories of the 27 typical soil profiles were divided into 5 orders(Halosols, Isohunosols, Argosols, Cambosols and Primosols), 10 suborders, 14 groups and 22 subgroups.4. According to Criteria for Establishment of Soil Family and Soil Series in Chinese Soil Taxonomy and considering the sizes of soil particles, mineral composition, p H, soil temperature, et al., the 27 typical soil profiles were classified into 25 soil families. Then considering the depth and thickness of selected horizon, texture of surface soil, salt content, rock fragments & concretion & intrusions and other soil properties, the 27 typical soil profiles were divided into 27 soil series.
