Nearly 20 years, Wuhan has become the core of the central cities’development. Green space is concerned seriously on the road to rapid development of urban. In the process of urban expansion and internal transformation of the old areas, the land use types and living vegetation volume (LVV) has changed severely. With the help of "3S" (GPS/RS/GIS) technology platform, through the remote sensing analysis of the Landsat5 TM images of 1990,1996,2000,2005,2009, extracting the land use types and vegetation index of Wuhan metropolitan area, and establishing regression relationship with actual survey data, this research extracted the LVV information, analyzed the evolution of land use types, total LVV scale, the laws of different grades and transfer characteristics, then discussed the driving force which causing the evolution of land use and LVV in metropolitan areas. The main contents and conclusions are as follows:(1) There is a significant correlation between Leaf area index (LAI) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and the correlation between LAI and NDVI is better than that between LAI and ratio vegetation index (RVI). Make LAI data as the dependent variable y, with NDVI as the independent variable x, the optimal regression equation is:y =8.937-46.371x+78.812 x2-35.358x3 (R2=0.754);(2) The area of water and farmland was decreasing in the past 20 years, hard-surface space and green space area was increased year by year, the rate of green space increase is not big. Water area reduced 8244.27 ha, farmland area decreased by 32,131.60 ha, green space area increased by 9874.44 ha, hard-surface space area increased by 30,366.00 ha;(3) The total amount of LVV reduced from 1990 to 1996. The total amount of LVV was 9.85*104 ha and 9.68* 104 ha respectively at these two times. Overall, the total amount of LVV shows increasing trend, the total amount of LVV increased by 3.92* 104 ha in the past 20 years;(4) The stability of low and middle level LVV green space is poor, and turns to farmland and hard-surface space gradually, nearly 20 years low level green space had a higher transfer area rate, which of four periods was respectively 48.21%,66.34%,76.28% and 66.74%, area turned to farmland and hard-surface space was 5445.72 ha,14,335.83 ha,15,215.67 ha,11,645.37 ha respectively; the transfer area rate of middle level green space was 76.89%,74.87%,73.16%,72.26%, transfer area was 1637.01 ha,4232.16 ha, 4272.48 ha,4376.25 ha;(5) High level LVV green space is more stable, it mainly turns to low and middle level LVV green space, the transfer rate of four periods was 48.79%、35.96%、49.48%、 24.46% respectively, the transfer rate turned to low and middle level LVV green space was 26.01%、8.81%、30.54%、11.08% respectively;(6) The transfer rate of waters is lower, waters mainly turns to hard-surface space and farmland, and there’re 2 main types when waters turns to hard-surface space:one is turning to rigid construction land, this type occurs mainly in the high-speed development district and downtown; the other is turning to hard-surface mudflat and water-level-fluctuating zone, this type mainly occurs in the suburb, and has a great relationship with the water level. Transfer to farmland occurred mostly in the suburb;(7) The transfer rate of hard-surface space is between 30% to 40%, and it mainly turns to low LVV green space, the transfer area of four periods was 5940.00 ha,4,859.37 ha,5,530.59 ha,9,089.55 ha respectively;(8) The transfer rate of farmland is below 20%, since the farmland takes the largest proportion of metropolitan area, although the transfer rate is low, the farmland is still the type of largest transfer area in each period. The transfer area of farmland in four periods were 14,092.20 ha,31,804.56 ha,33,086.52 ha,31,092.48 ha respectively. Farmland mainly turning to low level LVV green space and hard-surface space is the result of a strong interference of artificial construction;(9) The first driving factor has a big contribution to the evolution of LVV, and has an obvious discrepancy from the second driving factor’s contribution rate, the contribution rate of the first driving factor is 90.060%, indicating that factors as urban economic development, demographic factors, living standards of urban and rural have a great influence on the evolution of LVV in metropolitan area; the contribution rate of the second driving factor is 6.215%, General Retail Price Index(GRPI) and General Consumer Price Index(GCPI) have a negative correlation with the LVV’s evolution of Wuhan metropolitan area.
