This experiment study effects of different spatial pattern on water distribution and water use efficiency, under the relay strip intercropping system of maize and soybean, different maize rows distance as experiment factors, ChuanDan 418 and Nandou 12 are experiment material. And analysis the rainfall redistribution, plant transpiration, soil evaporation; soil moisture, yield and water use efficiency, water equivalent ratio as the evaluation index. And which afford the fundamental research and technology foundation for maize and soybean relay strip intercropping water use efficiently. The main research results are as follows:1. Because the leaf area index of maize narrow rows is bigger than wide rows, leaf of maize shade for narrow rows is higher than for wide rows, making the throughfall of wide rows is more than narrow rows, so that rainfall is redistribution, as the rainfall is more, the proportion of rain allocation is less. Under the relay strip system of maize and soybean, the soil evaporation and throughfall are showing maize rows< maize-soybean rows<soybean rows, the soil moisture is showing:maize rows< maize-soybean rows< soybean rows, uneven distribution of throughfall and the different of maize and soybean’ ability to absorb moisture, were main reasons of soil moisture uneven distribution in symbiotic period.2. Maize yield increase, the yield of soybean is decrease with maize row increase. When maize rows is 50cm, the maize yield become biggest unde maize-soybean relay strip intercropping systems. The yield of soybean on 2.0m strip width are 1.5 times of 1.6m strip width. The group yield is most, when the maize rows is 50cm, and it greater than monoculture soybean and maize significantly. The land equivalent ratio are 1.41~1.62 and 1.61~1.81, under the 1.6m and 2.0 strip width. When maize rows are between 30cm and 50cm, maize-soybean relay strip intercropping systems can increase land use efficiency.3. Crop under relay strip intercropping systems does not increase the water consumption. The water use efficiency increase fristly and then decrease, as the maize rows increase. When maize rows distance became 50cm, the water use efficiency of two kinds width strip became highest, ware 23.06kg·ha-1·mm-1 and 26.60kg·ha-1·mm-1, but ware less 11.48% and 25.39% than Single maize, ware higher 246.77% and 278.07% than Single soybean. The water use efficiency of two kinds width strip ware higher 38.92% and 22.98% than single crop in all.4. The water equivalent ratio increase fristly and then decrease as the maize rows increase. The water equivalent ratio were 1.45~1.66 and 1.60~1.79 on two kinds of strip width, when maize rows was 40~50cm, it can increase water use efficiency of intercropping effectively.
