As a populous agricultural power, the agriculture has always taken up significant strategic position in China during centuries. However, the agricultural production and management mode still remain primitive as centuries before, causing great resource consumption due to its low efficiency. Especially for the agricultural irrigation, ditch irrigation and flood irrigation are still prevailing in China, deteriorating the global water supply situation and handicapping the healthy and sustainable development of Chinese agriculture. To change the circumstance aforementioned and help with the transformation of Chinese agriculture, this paper has studied and designed an intelligent irrigation system which devotes to improve irrigation efficiency and boost agricultural productivity, by taking the advantages of the wireless sensor network (WSN), Internet, and Internet of Things (IOT) technologies. Here describes relevant works as follows:(1) The overall system architecture designation. Through the comparison, research and analyze of relevant techniques, the paper has put up with a design scheme that collects crop growth environment factors via a ZigBee wireless sensor network of Mesh-topology, sends the collected environment factors to remote server via GPRS network and controls the irrigation process via the remote server. The sensing, routing, actuator and gateway-coordinator network nodes that compose up the ZigBee wireless sensor network are respectively responsible for environment factors sensing, packet forwarding, irrigation execution and network initialization and Internet-interaction.(2) The selection and designation for hardware system. In hardware selection, the paper has quantitatively compared and analyzed mainstream ZigBee SoC solutions under a series of quantitative indexes, then picked out the CC2530 ZigBee SoC solution as the foundation for the build-up of network node devices. On this basis, the paper has furtherly fulfilled the peripheral devices selection for every node type accordingly. In hardware designation, the paper has elaborately illustrated the schematic design for each node devices and tested critical schematic designs for performance.(3) The design and development for node software system and remote monitoring platform. According to functionality features of every node type, this paper has correspondingly designed the node software and analyzed its workflow. Through the requirement analysis, the paper has selected the Browser-Server paradigm as platform architecture and then designed and developed the database, server-side routines and front-end view pages.(4)The performance optimization for ZigBee wireless sensor network. The paper has designed an electronic lightning pre-warning system to ensure the outdoor node safety by inspecting the local electric field strength. For network transmission efficiency optimization, the paper has studied the packet routing algorithm then chosen the based-on-service (BOS) packet routing strategy. For measurement precision enhancement, the paper has introduced the coefficient self-tuning data fusion algorithm.During the test and assessment of intelligent irrigation system, the ZigBee wireless sensor network has realized the collection and transmission of growth environment factors. The remote monitoring platform has realized the analysis and archiving of growth environment factors, the irrigation process control and guidance, and the system remote access and control, the user interface design of remote monitoring platform is simple, user-friendly and easy-to-use. The BOS packet routing strategy and coefficient self-tuning data fusion algorithm has dramatically optimized the network performance, both the network transmission efficiency and measurement precision has been efficiently improved.
