As a source of high quality forage protein, Alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) is one of the most important forage grasses in animal husbandry. Plant diseases and insect pests are main factors that restrict the alfalfa production. In order to ensure the normal growth seedlings and increase the yield of alfalfa, developed countries and regions often use seed coating agent for seed treatment. In this study, alfalfa seeds were used as materials. Five common kinds of seed coating agent were selected as seed treatments. Three concentration gradients were set for each treatment, and the contorl was established as well. There were 16 treatment group in total. Through a combination of laboratory and field test on determinations of germination rate, seedling number, plant height, fresh yield, stem-leaf ratio, context of crude protein(CP), neutral detergent fiber(NDF), acid detergent fiber(ADF), and net photosynthetic rate, we investigated the effects of different seed coating agents on alfalfa seed gemination and vegetative growth, the select suitable coating agents for local alfalfa production. The results showed that seed coating had obvious facilitation or inhibition effects on seed germination rate and seedling number. After treatment, seed germination rates of 5 groups were significantly higher than that of the control group(P < 0.05), increasing by 8.67% to 16.67%; the seedling number of 3 groups was significantly higher than that of the control group, and they were improved by 13.31% to 39.94%.Except 0.5% fludioxonil treatment group, with poor performance in plant height and fresh grass yield, the remaining groups of seed coating treatment increased the yield of alfalfa. Compared with the control group, the plant height of 1.5% fludioxonil treatment group was increased 19.25%. The grass yield of 1.5% fludioxonil, 5% carbofuran, 5.4% C-E-triazole ketone groups were improved by 30.81% to 48.26%.Meanwhile, seed coating significantly improved the quality of alfalfa. The CP contents were improved by 0.40% ~ 2.94%; the NDF and ADF contents were reduced by 0.95%~17.37% and 0.58%~8.52%; the net photosynthetic rate greatly varied among treatments, but consisted with variation of fresh yield. To conclude,(1) using 7% imidacloprid, 1.5% fludioxonil, 10% thiram-carb-ofuran, alfalfa seed germination rate was significantly increased by 16.89%~22.22%;(2) the use of 1.5% fludioxonil, 5.4% C-E-triadimefon, 5% carbofuran as alfalfa seed coat agents significantly increased the yield of alfalfa;(3) the utilization of seed coating did not directly improve the nutritional quality of alfalfa, but improved the crude protein content of plants and reduce the content of crude fiber by adjusting leaf ratio to improve palatability.
