Ocean-going squid fishing is an important pillar industry of China’s ocean fishing, which now have more than 600 vessels. Fish aggregation lamp is an important auxiliary equipment of squid fishing, and the mainly used of fish aggregation lamp in our country’s squid fishing industry is still metal halide fish lamp, which the 1 kW, 2 kW metal halide fish lamp accounted for a large proportion. Now our squid fishing industry is facing issues such as excessive competition in the industry and energy consumption and so on, and the new energy-saving LED lamps is not widely popular, the use of LED lamps lack of scientific understanding. So, the paper selected flat-300 W white LED lamp compare with the 1 kW, 2 kW metal halide lamp which performances similar, make a comprehensive comparison of their optical characteristics, analysis and comparison of the two types of fish lamps’ suitable for fishing performance through their illumination distribution of water, and the appropriate mounting angle of LED lamp is obtained by calculating, we hope people can be more intuitive to see the difference between two types of fish lamps and the pros and cons by a comprehensive analysis and comparison, and improve lighting utilization by selecting a suitable mounting angle utilization, we hope the paper can make a contribution to promote the popularization and application of LED lamp in our country’s squid fishing industry, and provide a reference for more in-depth study of the future. The main findings are as follows:(1) Research of optical properties on fishing lamp. Based on the findings, the 300 W LED lamp light is highly directional, spatial light illumination is radioactive decay, around the lamp light intensity at 1m is 1000 lx, rates vary widely within 1~3 m range, from 1150 lx reduce to 350 lx, stabilized after 3 m, the average value of illumination is 650 lx, in the four weeks of lamp capable of forming a strong illumination distribution and the illumination uniform, it has the strongest light in the LED lamp normal line direction, as the distance increases light intensity reflected from the exponential decay of the phenomenon, its light has a strong penetration in the air. The spectral distribution of LED lamp relatively concentrate, concentrate in 450 nm, 570 nm two bands, which Is in the blue-green wavelength range and does not contain infrared and ultraviolet. Respecting to the metal halide lamp, LED lamp is more suitable for squid fishing operations, which has higher light utilization, higher light use efficiency, and greener.(2) Analysis on the suitable for fishing performance of fishing lamps. In this paper, the two types of fish lamps’ illumination was measured in water, by which we draw the light attenuation trend in water, we simulations of the contours of underwater irradiance of the fishing lamps by attenuating trend, and then analysis and comparison of the two types of fish lamps’ suitable for fishing performance. Through the study found, the LED lamp’s lights in water exponentially decay, the decay rate is less than the metal halide lamp, which have a stronger penetration in the water. The peak illumination of LED lamp appears at 0 ~ 5 m in water where appropriates within the scope of fishing, the illumination reach 741 lx, which is greater than 1kW metal halide lamp less than 2 kW metal halide lamp, that restrictions on its power. According to the isolux distribution in water, the LED lamp at a horizontal distance 1 ~ 10 m range decay rapidly, the optical illumination intensity below the surface at a horizontal distance 10 m is about 100 lx, 10 lx at about 25 m, 6 lx at about 30 m, the effective luminance value level of 0.1 lx at the distances of up to 53.5 m, the deepest up to 44.1 m. The LED lamp with respect to the metal halide lamp, penetrates more stronger in water, has higher luminous efficiency, can produce a strong illumination distribution within the appropriate range of fishing, the effective luminance can reach more remote and deeper depth, which has the excellent suitable for fishing performance, that is suitable for squid fishing operations.(3) Research on the mounting angle of LED lamp. According to the light emitting characteristics of LED lamp, in the section C = 0 has the strongest illumination distribution, which fitting draw the tangent distribution formula is Y = 5301sin(0.01939 x + 1.582); according to the fitting formula we obtained the light intensity value I(C, γ) at(C, γ) through the establishment of C-γ coordinate system, according to the actual operation light operating range, we use superposition method to calculate the luminance values obtained for each distance, and we get the result that LED single lamp dispersion increases with the installation angle decreases by dispersion formula, and the dispersion of illumination reach the minimum level with the strongest illumination value when the installation angle of 110 degrees. At the same time, we take into account the average beam angle of LED lamp and light dispersion and other parameters, and we also take into account the effect of the ship gear angle and waves when in actual operation process,and we finally get the mounting angle LED lamp desirable between 130 to 150 degrees.
