Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world, andhypertension is a major risk factor. The methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase(MTHFR) C677/T polymorphism is associated with hypertension in certainpopulations. This study investigated the association between the MTHFRpolymorphism and hypertension and blood lipid correlative index, includinghomocysteine (HCY), lipoprotein (a)[Lp (a)], high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), apolipoprotein A I (Apo AI), ApoB, glucose (GLU), total cholesterol (TC), and triglyceride (TG), in a Chinesepopulation. Objective:Observed the association among MTHFR C677/T polymorphism, hypertensionand the blood lipid correlative index of Chinese Jiangxi Province population. Theresults may be useful for local public health department and experts to design moreeffective measures for specific populations. Methods:A total of174patients with hypertension and634healthy controls from JiangxiProvince were recruited between June,2012and September,2012for genotyping ofMTHFR C677/T polymorphism using polymerase chain reaction restriction fragmentlength polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Biochemical parameters were also assessed inthese subjects and statistically associated with MTHFR C677/T polymorphism andrisk of hypertension.Results:1、There are3genotypes ofMTHFR677:wild type(CC),heterozygous mutation(CT),homozygous mutation (TT)。In hypertensive group, the frequencies of CC is25.9%,CT is30.4%and TT is43.7%;while C allele is41.1%,T allele is58.9%。And in control group the frequencies of CC is40.7%,CT is45.9%,TT is13.4%,C allele is63.6%,T allele is36.4%。The frequency of TT genotype and T allele inhypertension patients was significantly higher than those of the healthy controls(P<0.001). The OR of TT genotype and hypertension was5.009.2、HCY and Lp (a) levels of hypertension patients were significantly higher thanthose of the healthy controls(P<0.001).3、HCY and Lp (a) levels were significantly higher in subjects with a MTHFR677TT genotype than in those with a CC/CT genotype, independent of hypertension(P<0.001).Conclusion:The data from the current study demonstrates that MTHFR C677/T polymer-phism contributes to hypertension risk via an increase in HCY levels.
