Objective To evaluate the clinical results of unicompartmental knee arthroplastywith short-and middle-term follow-up. Evaluate whether per-operative T2mapping of theknee correlations with progression of arthritis in the other compartment after UKA.Methods From June2002to December2013,21patients who underwent UKAwere covered in this study (men5, female16, mean age of62.67±7.66years). All patientshad primary antero-medial osteoarthritis with an intact anterior cruciate ligament.10patients(From2012to2013) underwent routine knee MR imaging protocol to assess grosscartilage morphology and a T2mapping sequence. The HSS knee scores, VAS and ROMbefore operation and at the last review after operation were compared to evaluate thefunction of the knee. Patients with any complications after UKA were documented.Preoperative and postoperative was compared with the Student t test. Results Four patients lost to follow-up (Link prostheses). The mean follow-up was32.41±33.45months. There was no incidence of infection, dislocation and revision. Threepatients had complication after operation.Postoperative knee VAS, HSS and ROM were significantly improved (p<0.01).Ongoing pain past the half-year mark occurred in two patients post-operative andimprovement with conservative treatment. On close questioning, the pain had significantlydiminished and the patients were functioning very well. One case without any clinical symptoms suffered with osteophyte in the lateralcompartment. The mean follow-up for10cases with preoperative MRI was14.5±6.9months. T2values of those patients (pain occurred in two patients and one patient suffered with osteophyte) were higher than normal value (39.54±4.02ms)Conclusion1、The advantages of the UKA over the TKA include a preservation of bone stock, maintenance of more normal joint kinematics due to ACL sparing techniques, betterproprioception, better ROM, and faster recovery. UKA is a reliable, proven treatmentmodality for anterior-medial knee arthrosis in short follow-up.2、Preoperative patients with higher cartilage T2values may be one of factors whichresult in postoperative cartilage degeneration. As the follow-up time is not enough andconsisted of a relatively small number of patients, the per-operative T2mapping of theknee correlations with progression of arthritis in the other compartment after UKA remainto be observed.
