BackgroundNasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC) is a common malignant tumor in head and neck in china. More than90%of the NPC is undifferentiated carcinoma, therefore, compared with other head and neck cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma is more sensitive to chemotherapy, radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy has become the standard treatment mode of locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma. For recurrent or distant metastasis of the NPC, the main or even the only treatment is chemotherapy. With the highlight of the importance of chemotherapy, the new antitumor drug is continuing to development and use, however, Restriction of chemotherapy drugs, such as drug resistance and drug toxicity, is still found in clinical application, which hinders the clinical application and efficacy of chemotherapy drugs, but also reduce quality of life in the patients with chemotherapy, and even lead to patient death. Therefore reducing the toxicity of chemotherapy drugs, protecting the body from damage, reducing resistance is a prerequisite to ensure the normal treatment of patients with malignancies.Acupuncture can prevent and treat diseases. Different from the chemical treatment and surgical operation, acupuncture is used in the treatment of cancer, not on the tumor itself, but on the tumor itself by the body’s nerve-endocrine-immune network. From the beginning of the1950s and1960s, acupuncture master, professor Yu use pulse acupuncture to treat a variety of advanced cancer, and has made gratifying achievements.ObjectiveThis research makes pulse acupuncture to cure induction chemotherapy of stage Ⅲ, Ⅳa of NPC as cut-in point, and guide the accuracy of clinical diagnosis through systemic pulse, syndrome differentiation and changes of pulse. It use statistical analysis of quantitative score as Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST), Symptom score, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) and so on, to evaluate the effect of the pulse acupuncture on improve effect and decrease toxicity of chemotherapy in patients with NPC, and provide more objective evaluation of the efficacy for the pulse acupuncture to treat the NPC with chemotherapy, but also provides a method and a new idea for characteristics of Chinese medicine therapy combined with modern treatment techniques treating of incurable diseases.MethodsTo collect40patients, met the inclusion criteria of first diagnosed in NPC with a period of Ⅲ, Ⅳa, and divided into the control group and the experimental group combined with pulse acupuncture which is3times per week, each time for40minutes, a total of2courses and a course every21days, both for induction chemotherapy which is a course of treatment every21days, a total of2courses and20patients in each group, the experimental group combined with pulse acupuncture which is3times per week, each time for40minutes, a total of2courses, a course every21days, as the serial number of visits correspond to pre-designed randomized envelope number. Before and after treatment, to evaluate in general, the clinical symptoms, tumor size, physical condition (KPS score), related biochemical indexes including three convention-al examination(blood, urine, then), ECG,liver function (ALT, TBIL), renal funct-ion(BUN,Cr), imaging findings and so on, and carry on their statistical analy-sis, is to observe the curative effect of pulse acupuncture on improve effect and decrease toxicity of chemotherapy in patients with NPC.Results1In the primary attenuated outcome measures, by independent sample t-test, toxicity grading score before and after chemotherapy is statistically significant difference in the first term chemotherapy between groups (P<0.05), that the experimental group was better than the control group, but is not statistically significant difference in the two-way chemotherapy between groups (P>0.05), that it need to be further studied by large sample.2In the primary attenuated outcome measures, by rank test, the clinical symptoms, physical condition is statistically significant difference between groups (P<0.01), that the experimental group was better than the control group.3In the primary efficiency outcome measures, by Fisher’s exact test, the tumor size is not statistically significant difference between groups (P>0.05), that it need to be further studied by large sample.ConelusionsThe results of this study show:Effect of chemotherapy on tumor is not obvious, which can not determine the synergistic effect of pulse acupuncture on chemotherapy and need to be further studied by large sample, but the pulse acupuncture can reduce the acute and subacute toxicity side effects of chemotherapy, actively improve the physical condition of patients and reduced symptoms to decrease toxicity of chemotherapy in patients. And the pulse acupuncture is safe, reliable and no side effects, but also dialectical treatment. so the pulse acupuncture is worthy of further promotion. Of course, the design of the test group in this research can be further strengthened after increasing the sample size and the depth of research still needs to increase sample after further study, the depth of the study can also be increased.
