Background:Conventional studies have shown inconsistent resultsfor efficacy of Tianeptine versus selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor(SSRI).We therefore did this study to assess the efficacy and safety ofthem on major depression. Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in relevant databases:Cochrane Library, Pubmed, Web of Knowledge, Embase, ChineseBiomedical Literature Database, China National Knowledge Internet,Wanfang Data, VIP were searched. Quality of the literature of included wasevaluated and data was extracted. Review Manager5.2software was usedfor Meta analysis. Results: Twelve RCTs of2143patients were included in ourstudy,1086patients in Tianeptine group and1057patients in SSRI group.Meta-analysis results indicate that patients treated with tianeptineefficiency of SSRI treatment group, no significant difference (effective rateRR=1.01(95%CI=0.95-1.07),P=0.85), and tianeptine treatment group nausea, vomiting, constipation, insomnia and loss of appetite weresignificantly lower than the SSRI drug treatment group (P<0.05), while thehigh incidence of somnolence SSRI drug treatment group; remainingincidence of side effects was not statistically significant (P>0.05).Conclusions: Although tianeptine treatment of depression with SSRIefficacy of drug treatment for depression was not statistically significant, but its side effects was significantly lower than the SSRI drugs, so theclinical use of drugs has certain guiding significance.
