| 1. Motivations for sexual risk behaviors among old men in Shanghai: a qualitative studyObjective:To explore the personal motivators of sexual risk behaviors among men aged 50 years and over in China. Methods:In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 HIV-infected and 14-uninfected men aged 50 years and over in Shanghai, China. Results:71.4% of heterosexual participants had commercial sex,37.5% had casual sex and steady extramarital partner. All gay/bisexual participants had casual sex with men,16.7% had commercial sex. Personal motivations associated with sexual risk behaviors included sexual desire and interest remains high into later life, unfulfilled sexual desire within marriage, homo-or bisexual orientation, socialize with others, peer influence, personal hobby, and economic factors. Conclusions:Education in shaping people’s perceptions of the sexuality of older adults is needed. Our findings also emphasize the need for developing prevention and intervention programs that seek to reduce sexual risk behaviors in the older male population.2. Prevalence and correlates of HIV, syphilis and HSV-2 infections among male STD clinic attendees aged over 50 yearsObjective:To explore the prevalence and correlates of HIV, syphilis and HSV-2 infection among male STD clinic attendants aged 50 years and over in Jing’an District of Shanghai. Methods:All male STD clinic attendees aged 50 years and over in Huashan Hospital and Jing’an District Central Hospital during the study period of March to September in 2011 were informed consent to participate in a questionnaire interview, with blood test for HIV, syphilis and HSV-2. Results:A total of 157 participants were included. The average age was 60.1±7.7 years. All of them were ethnic Han,78.3% had permanent residence of Shanghai,86.6% had a education level of high school and below,86.0% were currently married,56.1% were currently retired, and 96.8% had siblings. HIV/AIDS knowledge is 46.5%. One (0.6%) was HIV positive,38(24.2%) were syphilis positive, low education level (OR:3.53,95%CI: 1.26~9.90), had no children (OR:0.08,95%CI:0.01~0.75), and had more sexual partners in the past six months (OR:0.05,95%CI:0.01~0.43) were significantly associated with the syphilis infection.52 (33.1%) were HSV-2 positive. retired (OR: 2.68,95%CI:1.23~5.85). married and had children (OR:0.08,95%CI:0.01~0.88) were significantly associated with the HSV-2 infection. Conclusions:The prevalence of syphilis and HSV-2 was very high among male STD clinic attendants aged over 50 years in Jing’an District of Shanghai, underscoring urgent needs of intensive efforts for STD and AIDS prevention and control in this population.3. Prevalence and correlates of HIV, syphilis and HSV-2 infections among male VCT attendees aged over 50 yearsObjectives:To explore the prevalence and correlates of HIV, syphilis, HSV-2 infection among old male voluntary HIV counseling and testing attendees (VCT) aged 50 years and over in Jing’an District of Shanghai. Methods:All male VCT attendants aged 50 years and over in Jing’an District Center for Disease Control and Prevention of Shanghai during the study period of January in 2011 to December in 2012 were informed consent to participate in a questionnaire interview, with blood test for HIV, syphilis and HSV-2. Results:A total of 136 participants were included. The average age was 56.9±5.9 years. All of them were ethnic Han,86.8% was local resident of Shanghai,63.2% had at least an education level of high school,63.2% were currently married,40.7% have retired,49.3% of people who have children but do not live with their children. HIV/AIDS knowledge about is 74.3%. Six (4.4%) was HIV positive.,same-sex sexual behavior(OR:9.83,95%CI:1.12~73.41) was significantly associated with HIV infection..8.8% was syphilis positive, Syphilis infection was significantly correlated with same-sex sexual behavior(OR:4.96,95%CI:1.37~15.35), and the number of sexual partners in the past six months(OR:2.32,95%CI: 1.01~5.67).14 (14.3%) were HSV-2 positive. HSV-2 infection was significantly correlated with unmarried and the number of sexual partners. Conclusions:The prevalence of HIV, syphilis and HSV-2 was very high among old male VCT clinic attendants aged 50 years and over in Jing’an District of Shanghai, extramarital sex was very high and VCT clinic was very low utilization. Old men aged 50 years and overshould be included in AIDS prevention and control key population groups, step up publicity efforts to actively intervene in their detection.4. Prevalence and correlates of HIV, syphilis and HSV-2 infections among MSM aged over 50 yearsObjective:To explore the prevalence and correlates of HIV, syphilis, HSV-2 infection among the age of 50 or older MSM (who have sex with men, MSM) in Shanghai. Methods:All the age of 50 or older MSM were recruited by an NGO during the study period of May in 2011 to April in 2013, and all the subjects were informed consent to participate in a questionnaire interview, with blood tests for HIV, syphilis and HSV-2 by CDC. Results:A total of 165 participants were included. The average age o was 58.7±7.5 years.81.8% was local resident of Shanghai,61.8% was currently married, 59.4% had at least senior high school education. The average of awareness of knowledge of AIDS is 82.4%.97.0% of respondents reported had sex with men in the past six months.The prevalence of HIV infection was 10.9%, marital status (OR: 5.75,95%CI:1.33~24.82)), drinking (OR:18.39,95%CI:2.92~115.78), and the number of male sexual partners (OR:45.07,95%CI:,7.63~115.78) were significantly associated with HIV infection. The prevalence of syphilis infection was 15.8%, had at least senior high school education (OR:3.76,95%CI:1.56~21.26), male-male sexual behaviors when acting roles (OR:11.46,95%CI:1.02~128.95), group male-male sexual behaviors (OR:9.92,95%CI:,2.72~36.11), and use condom in last sex (OR:0.12,95%CI:,0.12~0.44) were significantly associated with syphilis infection. The prevalence of HSV-2 infection was 5.5%, the total number of sexual partners in life (OR:17.78,95%CI:2.12~51.23) were significantly associated with HIV infection, respectively. Conclusions:The prevalence of HIV, syphilis and HSV-2 infection is higher among old MSM aged 50 years and over, propaganda of AIDS-related knowledge, health education and behavior intervention should be strengthened to prevent the prevalence of AIDS. |
