Garcinia mangostana L.(Guttiferae), commonly known as mangosteen. Its pericarp has been used in Thai indigenous medicine for the treatment of skin infections, wounds, and diarrhea for many years. A phytochemical study on the pericarp of mangosteen resulted in Sixteen compounds, of which two were determined as new. The new compounds and some of the known compounds were biologically evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxic and antioxidant activity.Sixteen compounds were obtained by the column chromatography from the EtOAc part of the EtOH extract of the pericarps, namely,1,5,8-trihydroxy-3-methoxy-2-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)xanthone (1), tovophillin A (2), garcinone E (3), α-mangostin (4), mangostenone D (5),1,3,6-trihydroxy-2,5-bis(3-methylbut-2-enyl)-6’,6’-dimethyl-4’,5’-dihydropyrano[2’,3’:7,8]xanthone (6), garcimangoxantho-ne D (7), mangostanol (8), smeathxanthone A (9), garcimangoxanthone E (10), pruniflorone A (11), γ-mangostin (12), garcinone B (13),1-isomangostin (14), garcinone C (15), isoathyriol (16). Among them, compounds7and10were new. Compounds11and16were isolated from this genus for the first time.Compounds1-10and12were evaluated for their cytotoxicities by MTT method and antioxidant activities by FRAP assays. Compound7exhibited moderate cytotoxicity against Hep-G2and weak cytotoxicity against MCF-7cell lines, and compound10showed moderate cytotoxicity against A549, Hep-G2and MCF-7cell lines. Compounds3,4,5and12showed strong inhibitory effect on the three cell lines. Both compounds7and10demonstrated a weak antioxidant activity. Compounds1,9and12showed potent antioxidant activity.
