Objective:To explore the probable associated factors ofthyroid associated ophthalmopathy(TAO) among hyperthyroidism patients and to provide the basement for the scientific research and clinical prevention and treatment.Methods:Case-control study of hyperthyroidism in-patients in Guangxi Medical University First Affiliated Hospital since January2013to June2013. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to analyze the probable clinical factors affecting the TAO.Results:A total of205hyperthyroidism in-patients were included(133females[69.92%] and72males[77.78%]). Univariate analyses revealed that age(P=0.759),gender(P=0.105), family history(P=0.214), complications(P=0.15), TT3(P=0.409), TT4(P=0.364), FT3(P=0.114), FT4(P=0.472), TSH(P=0.687), TGAb(P=0.148), TMAb(P=0.164) were not associated with the incidence of TAO, but occupations(P=0.028), smoking(P=0.008), TRAb(P=0.03), treatment for hyperthyroidism(P=0.000), complications followed by antithyroid drugstherapy(P=0.02) and systemic complications(P<0.05) were positively. Multivariate analyses of the treatment for hyperthyroidism suggested thyroid surgery was not associated with TAO, meanwhile single antithyroid drug therapy was the protective factor. Conclusion:Risk factors that influence the incidence andof TAO in hyperthyroidism in-patients include smoking, TRAb, occupations, complications followed by antithyroid drugs therapy and systemic complications, especially the last three factors were affirmed for the first time. TRAb and smoking are notable positive correlated with the progression of TAO. Single antithyroid medication treatment may reduce the probability of TAO, with the mechanismunder investigation.
