ObjectiveTo investigate the status quo of oral specialist nurses’ core competency in Henan province; To compare the differences of oral specialist nurses’ core competency from different background; To explore the relationship between oral specialist nurses’ core competency and social support, team organization atmosphere in hospital; To know the status quo of oral specialist nurses’ social support and the atmosphere of team organization in Henan province, and compare the differences of oral specialist nurses’ social support and the atmosphere of team organization in hospital from different background, which can provide the evidence to improve oral specialist nurses’ core competency and promote the development of oral care career. MethodsWith convenience and the cluster sampling method, 124 nurses and 121 doctors who met the inclusion criteria in four oral specialized hospitals in Henan province. The study was done from Match to May in 2014 with self-assessment and his assessment survey. The tools included general data questionnaire, oral specialist nurses core self-rating and his assessment questionnaire, social support revalued scale and team-in-hospital organization climate scale. Epidata3.1 software double entry was used to collect data and SPSS17.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Statistical methods included descriptive statistics analysis, one-way ANOVA, t test, correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. Results1. The status quo of oral specialist nurses’ core competency in Henan province.The average score of 124 oral specialist nurses’ core competency in self-evaluation was 2.33±0.51, but 2.23±0.49 in his assessment. It showed the highest scores were in professional attitude dimension, the lowest scores were in professional developmental ability dimension. Three entries of the lowest scores were secondary dimension-clinical scientific research ability. The scores of self-evaluation of professional attitude, interpersonal skills and critical thinking ability were higher than that of his comments, the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05), there was no statistical significance of scores between the remaining four dimensions and core competency(P>0.05).2. The relationship between demographic characteristics and the oral specialist nurses’ core competency.The difference between various ages, working period of oral nursing, job titles, marital status and scores of oral specialist nurses’ core competency except the professional development included the remaining six dimensions scores were statistically significant(P<0.05); the difference of scores between different professional oral specialist nurses’ professional developmental ability was statistically significant(P<0.05); the difference of core ability scores, oral specialist nurses’ professional attitude, management ability, professional practical ability, critical thinking ability, education/consulting ability between different sources were statistically significant(P<0.05); the difference of core competency education of oral health nurses’ scores and management ability, critical thinking ability, ability education/consulting, professional development between different further learning situation were statistically significant(P<0.05); the difference in oral specialist nurses professional attitude, educating/consulting ability two dimensions scores between different circumstances involved in teaching were statistically significant(P<0.05).3. The relationship between oral specialist nursing core competency and social support, organization climate of the team in hospital.There were significant correlation with the scores of oral specialist nurses’ core competency and social support r=0.387,(P<0.01); There were significant correlation with oral specialist nurses’ core competency and organization climate of the team in hospital r=0.289,(P<0.01).4. Multiple linear regression analysis of oral specialist nurses’ core competency.Working period of the oral nursing, the hospital management and support, subjective support, further learning situation, the source could be used as the main predict factors of oral specialist nurses’ core competency, they could explain 37.3% of variability of oral specialist nurses’ core competency.5. The status of social support for oral specialist nurses in Henan province.The average social support score of 124 oral specialist nurses in Henan province was 40.36±7.11, the score of subjective support dimension was 23.04±4.39. 24.2% of oral specialist nurses could feel most neighbors’ care, 68.5% of oral specialist nurses could feel most colleagues’ care, 12.1% of oral specialist nurses thought family could fully support of their work.6. The relationship between the demographic characteristics and social support of oral specialist nurses.Scores of oral specialist nurses’ social support and subjective support, objective support two dimensions between different ages, oral nursing working years, job title, education, marital status were statistically significant(P<0.05); the difference of oral specialist nurses’ objective support score between different professional and participate in the teaching were statistically significant(P<0.05); the difference of oral specialist nurses’ subjective and the use of support between different study was statistically significant(P<0.05).7. The status of team organization atmosphere in hospital.The average score of team organization atmosphere in hospital was 4.79±0.79. The scores of dimensions from high to low in turn for patient understanding and communication, leadership and communication department, working collaboration and prospects, the hospital management and support.8. The relationships between demographic characteristics and team organization atmosphere in hospital.The difference of team organization atmosphere scores and the hospital management and support work, department leadership and communication, collaboration and prospect of three dimensions scores between different oral specialist nurses’ title were statistically significant(P<0.05); the difference of within the hospital team organizational climate and work collaboration and prospect scores between different mayor were statistically significant(P<0.05); the difference of the hospital management and support between different sources of oral specialist nurses scores were statistically significant(P<0.05). Conclusions1. Oral specialist nurses’ core competency in Henan province was at medium level, which remained to be further improved, especially in their own professional development.2. Age, working years of oral nursing, job title, marriage, professional, and further learning situation, participating in the teaching of oral specialist nurses could influence core competency on different degrees. According to these factors, nursing managers could train core competency better.3. The subjective support, the hospital management and support were the protective factors of the core competency, nursing managers could set up and improve the oral specialist nurses’ subjective social support system, strengthen the hospital management and support to improve core competency.4. Social support of oral specialist nurses in Henan province was at medium level, but still need to strengthen subjective support from family members in order to enhance the initiative to improve oral specialist nurses’ core competency; age, working years of oral nursing, job title, education, marriage, profession, further learning situation, participate in the teaching of oral specialist nurses could influence social support on different degrees.5. Team organization atmosphere in the hospital was at medium to high level, but oral specialist nurses’ perception of the hospital management and support still need to be strengthened; job title, profession, the source could influence team organization atmosphere in the hospital on different degrees.
