AIM:Comparative analysis of the clinical characteristics and effect of Phacoemulsification between the patients in or out the poverty alleviation program.METHODS:The cases are rise from the patients in our hospital from July 2013 to April 2014. We set two groups. Group A:30 eyes were performed the Phacoemulsification (implanted hard intraocular lens) who are in the poverty alleviation program. Group B:30 eyes were performed the operation of Phacoemulsification (implanted foldable intraocular lens) who are not in the poverty alleviation program. We chose the patients randomly and the operations were performed by the same seasoned surgeon. Then, we did the comparative analysis on the clinical characteristics and effect of Phacoemulsification.RESULTS:(1).age:Phacoemulsification was performed more in the patients older than 70 years old in group A. Otherwise, the operation was performed equal in the patients younger or older than 70 years old for 13 eyes and 17 eyes separately in group B. (2). The patients in group A had more diseases with eyes or the other system than the patients in group B. In group A, There are 17 eyes with hypertension,6 with diabetes,1 with deaf and mute,3 with fundus lesions (preoperative found),6 with other eye disease (thyroid related ophthalmopathy, nebula,macula, etc.). In group B, 11 eyes are combined with hypertension,8 with diabetes,4 eyes with fundus lesions (preoperative found),1 with pterygium. (3). Preoperative visual acuity had no significant difference in the two groups. In group A,12 eyes were equal or less to 0.05,2 eyes> 0.05 and< 0.1,16 eyes> 0.1 and < 0.3. In group B, the visual acuity of 12 eyes were less than 0.05,4 eyes> 0.05 and< 0.1,11 eyes> 0.1 and< 0.3,3 eyes> 0.3. (4). There was no significant difference with vision in the two groups one week after the operation. In group A,3 eyes< 0.3,4 eyes was 0.3 to 0.5,23 eyes was 0.5 or higher. In group B,4 eyes< 0.3,4 eyes was 0.3 to 0.5,22 eyes was equal to 0.5 or higher. (5). Complications:There was no complication in both groups.CONCLUSION:It has no significant differences in the operative effect between the group A and group B. Phacoemulsification is good for the visual recovery of the patients who suffering cataract when it’s possibly performed in the poverty alleviation program. The patients have more combined diseases related with eyes or other systemic diseases in the poverty alleviation program. Medical care and health propaganda of poverty-crowds have a long way to go.
