Purpose To analyze the causes of residual content of sulfur dioxide above standards in Pangolin Scales by measuring the contents of sulfur and sulfur dioxide in raw medical materials of Pangolin Scales, stir frying Pangolin Scales with sands, Vinegar Quenching of Pangolin Scales with the Element Analysis method and the distilation-Iodine Titration method, respectively. In addition,we measured the content of sulfur dioxide in self-made Pangolin Scales and Pangolin Scales from the markets with Ion Chromatography method, it can provide reference to make the upper limitation of sulfur dioxide residual content in the Pangolin Scales. Methods The 12 different batches of raw medicinal materials of Pangolin Scales from Yun Nan province and Guang Xi province are divided into two groups. The Element Analysis method and the Distillation-Iodine Titration method will be used to measure the sulfue content and sulfur dioxide residual content of raw medicinal materials of Pangolin Scales each. Referring the Regulation of Traditional Chinese Medicine Preparation for Zhe Jiang Province (2005 edition), six different batches of raw medicinal materials of Pangolin Scales are made for stirring frying Pangolin scales with sand and vinegar quenching, the distillation-Iodine Titration method determines the sulfur dioxide residual quantity of processing adjuvants(sand and vinegar), stir frying Pangolin scales and Vinegar Quenching. Comparing with the sulphur content of the raw medicinal materials of Pangolin Scales, we analyze the causes of the content of sulfur dioxide in stirring frying Pangolin scales above the standards. The sulfur dioxide residual quantity in Pangolin Scales from different producing areas and batches for Pangolin scales are determined by using the distillation-Iodine Titration method and Ion chromatography method, the reference range of sulfur dioxide residual quantity for Pangolin scales will be made. Results ①The sulfur dioxide residual contents of the fine sand and vinegar are 2.74mg/kg and 3.44mg/kg each.② There is no significant difference(P>0.05) between the sulfur dioxide residual amount in Guangxi Pangolin scales and Yunnan Pangolin scales. The sulfur dioxide residual amount of Pangolin scales which is fried with fine sand is obviously higher than the original one(P< 0.05). There is no obvious differences between stir frying Pangolin scales with sand and Vinegar Quenching, and no statistical significance(P> 0.05).③ There is no significant difference(P>0.05) between the distillation -Iodine Titration method and the Ion chromatography method. The sulfur dioxide residual content in self-made Pangolin scales and it from market are both more than 150mg/kg.Conclusion The sulfur dioxide residual amount of Pangolin scales has no direct relation with the adjuvants, and producing area. However, it has relation with its own existence of trace elements sulfur, the standard process is incurred mainly in sand-fired step. Judgying from the collected samples, we discover that the residual quantity of sulfur dioxide above standards in Pangolin scales is very common. The range of residual quantity for Pangolin scales whether to raise needs further study.
