Sjogren’s syndrome is a systemic autoimmune disease caused by secretory gland dysfunction, which is reflected by the dryness of mouth,eyes,nose,pharynx,larynx and vagina’s main mucosal surfaces. Since lacrimal and salivary glands are the mainly influenced glands.Xerostomia and xerophthalmia are the key clinical manifestations of Sjogren’s syndrome. Until now, the main western clinical treatment of this disease is to increase exocrine gland secretion and regional lubrication. While Chinese medicine adopts Chinese herbs to make internal and external treatment, trying to promote the secretion of saliva or body fluid and nourish orifices. This paper provides an overview of the research development of Sjogren’s syndrome’s pathogenesis and recent traditional Chinese and western treatments that are used for Sjogren syndrome-caused xerostomia and xerophthalmia.
