ObjectiveTo explore the effect prostatic artery embolism on treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH) with Bletilla striata.MethodsFrom June 2012 to February 201539 patients with BPH were studied in Dongguan Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. The prostatic artery was intubated high selectively, then injuected with the mixture of Bletilla striata and meglumine diatrzoate. Follow-up ranged from 1 to 12 months. Postoperative outcomes of IPSS, QOL, IIEF, Qmax, PRV and prostate volume were recorded and assessed, postoperative complications after surgery were analyzed to find out potential cause.ResultsProstatic artery embolization(PAE) was technically successful in 37 of the 39 patients (94.9%). IPSS decreased from 27.97±3.12 to 22.19±2.41,17.00 ±2.57,14.35±2.76 and 12.84±2.34 in 1,3,6 and 12 months follow-up, respect-ively (P<0.05). QOL, from 4.69±0.73 to 3.97±0.73,3.25±0.65,2.32±0.47, 2.23±0.56 (P<0.05). However, there was no significant change in the IIEF score before and after embolization (P>0.05). The Qmax of 9.38±2.45ml/s increased to 13.49±2.05,16.44±1.50,17.91±1.31 and 20.00±1.26 ml/s, respectively (P <0.05). The PRV of 102.59±6.92ml reduced to 44.73±2.01,30.47±2.22,14.26 ±1.60 and 10.39±1.33ml (P>0.05). The prostate volume decreased from 91.26 ±3.01ml to 85.27±2.58,73.47±2.25,57.41±2.39 and 52.68±2.50ml, respecti-vely(P<0.05). There were four minor complications, two had mild hematuresis and another two had pain and skin ecchymosis in thigh and perineum regions.ConclusionProstatic artery embolization to treat BPH with Chinese medicine Bletilla striata is feasible, efficacious and safe. It is minimally invasive and less complications. This study shows that the short-term outcomes is quite satisfied, however, larger studies are needed to assess its longer term result and potential morbidity. Furthermore, indication of PAE should be strictly controlled, the skill of PAE should be further improved in order to increase the successful rate.
