BackgroundWith the development of social economy and the continuous improvement of people’s living standard and consumption ability, beverage industry has entered a rapid development period, a wide variety of drinks are accepted by the public, people drink consumption appeared significantly increases.Carbonated drinks is one of the main representative drink sugary beverages, with special flavor, and was deeply loved by people, especially young people become the major consumer groups.Carbonated drinks contain energy is high, long-term drinking crowd will eat too much sugar, may be the cause of overweight and obese children and adolescents, a key factor may be lead to late life related chronic diseases, like diabetes, high blood pressure, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, cancer, etc.With the development of food industry, the proportion of processed foods is continuously increasing. Among the processed foods, beverages are becoming varied, and beverages consumption patterns also changed a lot in the world. With the large consumption, carbonated beverage is one of the most representative beverages. Currently, the impact of carbonated beverage on health has received a lot of attention, but the carbonated beverage consumption condition and influence factors in China are still unknown. Therefore, to investigate carbonated beverage consumption condition and influence factors has great importance on providing basic data and understanding trends to make dietary recommendations.ObjectivesTo understand the carbonated beverage consumption’s status,including consumption frequency and consumption amount of carbonated beverage in residents among nine provinces in China.The carbonated beverage consumption was influenced by gender, age, status of urban or rural, education level, occupation and region.The intake of added sugar’s risk assessment in carbonated beverage, and make reasonable recommendations on carbonated beverage consumption.MethodWe used data from Survey on Drinks and Beverage Alcohol Consumption among Residents in China 2013 which was condoncted by China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment.A total of 16775 individuals from nine provinces of China were included in the final analysis.Three non-consecutive 24-hour recalls and food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) were adopted to assess food consumption. Descriptive analysis methods were used to analyze the data. Logistic regression was applied to investigate the association between carbonated beverage consumption and influence factors.Results1.In 2013, the ratio of carbonated beverage consumption was 24.1%, which was statistically significantly higher in urban area than that in rural area (25.5% vs.22.6%, p<0.01). In either urban or rural area, the ratio of carbonated beverage consumption in male was statistically significantly higher than that in female (28.1% vs.23.1%, p<0.01; 24.4% vs.20.7%, p<0.01). Individuals with lower education levels shared the largest ratio of carbonated beverage consumption (55.1%, p>0.01).The average carbonated beverage consumption in nine provinces was 13.8 mL/d Among those did consumption beverage, the average consumption was 172.9 mL/d.2.The carbonated beverage consumption was influenced by gender, age, status of urban or rural, education level, occupation and region. Male group is the major consumption group. The ratio of consumption was decreased will the increase of age. Income was one of most important factors. People with higher income has larger amount of carbonated beverage consumption.3.The intake of added sugar was highest in the age group of 18~44 years old. This age group the intake of added sugar was 21.4 g/d in nine provinces, which was about 357.9 kJ. This age group the intake of added sugar of man and women were 23.8 g/d and 18.6 g/d, which were 397.3 kJ and 311.0 kJ. This age group the intake of added sugar of urban and rural area were 24.4 g/d and 15.3 g/d, which were 407.4 kJ and 255.1 kJ.Conclusions1.The amount of carbonated beverage consumption increased significantly in China.2.The carbonated beverage consumption was influenced by gender, age, status of urban or rural, education level, occupation and region.The young male was the biggest carbonated beverage consumption group. The ration of consumption was higher in urban than in rural. Education was positive associated with consumption of carbonated beverage.3.The intake of added sugar was highest in the age group of 18~44 years old. And the intake of added sugar in male was higher than that of female. The intake of added sugar was higher among people lived in urban than that in rural.4.Measures should be taken to educate residents to intake proper carbonated beverage.The carbonated beverage consumption is influenced by gender, age, status of urban or rural, education level, occupation and region.
