Objectives:The purpose of this study is to explore the comprehensive intervention effects on relieving the symptoms of the patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and improving their quality of life(QOL) during a six-month span of psychological and behavioral intervention. These results provide theoretical basis for the patients’ clinical comprehensive interventions, improve the patients’ treatment feature, assessment and evaluation indicators, and establish effective intervention program and improve the patients’quality of life.Methods:80 patients with IBS who met the inclusion criteria in GI outpatient in Yancheng first people’s hospital were selected as the participants. They were randomly divided into control group (40 cases) and intervention group (40 cases). Demographic data were collected of all such patients. Routine drug therapy and simple health education was given to the patients in control group. The patients in intervention group were given comprehensive interventions including psychological and behavioral intervention, same drug treatment as control group. All patients were supervised and visited by the researchers at fixed time. Patients’ severity of clinical symptoms, psychological status, and quality of life were respectively investigated and assessed by form of syndrome-classification in intestinal tract, self-reporting inventory-90 (SCL-90), and IBS-QOL before intervention and after intervention for 2,4 and 6 months. The results were presented in the form of mean±SD. Patients’scores of clinical symptoms,9 factors of SCL-90 and 8 dimensions of QOL before intervention and after intervention for 2,4 and 6 months, the change of these indicator by the time in control and intervention group of both groups were compared by Repeated Measures for ANOVA.Results:There was no statistical difference in patients’intestinal symptoms between control and intervention group before intervention (P>0.05). After intervention for 2 months, the scores of intestinal symptoms in intervention group were significantly better than that in control group(P<0.001). After intervention for 4 and 6 months, the scores of intestinal symptoms in intervention group was significantly better than those in control group (P<0.001).The results of Repeated Measures for ANOVA showed that the scores of intestinal symptoms in intervention group were significantly better than that in control group with the extended intervention time (P<0.001).There was statistical difference of SCL-90 score between 80 patients with IBS and Chinese norm before the intervention (P<0.01). It indicated that these patients expressed multiple mental problems, mainly anxiety, depression. The results of Repeated Measures for ANOVA showed that factors score of SCL-90 except hostility and stubborn in intervention group was lower than that in control group with the extended intervention time (P<0.05). After intervention for 2,4 and 6 months, each factor score of SCL-90 in intervention group was lower than that in control group(P<0.01).With the extended intervention time, the scores of SCL-90 in both control group and intervention group showed a decreasing trend, and the changes had statistical significance (P<0.001).The results of Repeated Measures for ANOVA indicated that the score of each dimension of QOL in intervention group was higher than that in control group with the extended intervention time (P<0.01). After intervention for 2,4 and 6 months, the score of each dimension of QOL except sexual behavior in intervention group was lower than that in control group (P<0.01).With the extended intervention time, the scores of anxiety, behavior barrier, body mind, health anxiety, dietary choosiness, social function and interpersonal relationship showed an increasing trend, and these changes had statistically differences(P<0.05).Conclusion:Both simple drug therapy and psychological, behavioral intervention can improve intestinal symptoms and psychological state of the patients with IBS, and their quality of life in different degrees. With the extended intervention time, the effect of psychological and behavioral intervention on improving intestinal symptoms, psychological state, and the patients’quality of life was better than simple drug therapy. Psychological and behavioral intervention is a safe effective method, and it is worth widely using in clinic.
