Objective: To investigate the expression of SDF-1, CXCR4 and NF-κB in human carotid atherosclerotic plaque and their relationship with the stability of atherosclerotic plaque.Methods: atherosclerotic plaque was collected from 21 patients with carotid artery intimal stripping in the Department of Neurosurgery, Affiliated Hospital of Qiingdao University from August 2014 to 2015 June. The plaque was obtained by routine paraffin embedding, slice and HE staining. According to the microscopic structure, the plaque tissue was divided into stable plaque group and unstable plaque group. The expression of SDF-1, CXCR4 and NF-κB in carotid atherosclerosis was observed by immunohistochemical method.Results: SDF-1 in plaque stability of smooth muscle cells in the number of positive cells and the average optical density for(73.89 ± 28.05),(263.39 ± 134.87), higher than in unstable plaque(44.58 ± 21.01),(146.24 ± 71.95) difference was statistically significant(t =-2.630,-2.366, P < 0.05). NF kappa B in the unstable plaque the average optical density(168.05±78.59) was higher than that of stable plaques(83.68±55.97) difference was statistically significant(t = 2.735,P < 0.05). The average optical density of CXCR4 in unstable plaque group and stable plaque group had no obvious statistical difference(t=1.063, P > 0.05). There was a negatively correlation between the expression of SDF-1and NF-κB in carotid atherosclerosis(r=-0.469,P < 0.05). NF-κB expression in atherosclerosis and plaque vulnerability index was positively correlated(r=0.473, P <0.05)Conclusion: 1. SDF-1 helps to maintain the stability of atherosclerosis. 2. Nuclear factor kappa B is associated with the instability of atherosclerosis. 3. SDF-1 and NF-κB have antagonistic effect on the progression of atherosclerosis..
