Yixing is well-known for its thousands of years of pottery making, among which Yixing redware is the most famous. Made from a kind of special material, with unique craftwork and varied shapes, Yixing redware is a typical exquisite handicraft although it has a history of only five hundred years as yet.In this paper, the samples of five periods were researched, including Late Ming, the beginning of Qing, Early Qing, Middle Qing, Late Qing to the republic of China and modern redware products, which were excavated from Yixing ancient kiln by Nanjing museum in 2006. In term of the development history of the technology of Yixing redware making, based on relevant documents and the results of samples testing and analyzing, we studied the performance characteristics of Yixing potteries in different periods and the evolution law about formula composition and processing performance .Besides, we analyzed the characteristics of different types of purple clay materials, and explored the factors which make redware tea set unique in the practical functionality compared with tea sets made from other materials.In the first chapter, we summarized the history of Yixing pottery making, the origin and development of Yingxi redware teapot. We focused on the development of the craftworks of Yixing pottery, including its molding and firing craftworks. Meanwhile, the status and prospect of Yixing redware at home and abroad and the problems in research were discussed in this chapter.In the second chapter,the raw materials from which Yixing redware tea set is made was analyzed. We studied the chemical composition characteristics mainly through physical-chemical and thermal testing of redware material, and found out the differences between clay materials, their advantages and disadvantages and the scope of application of each material. Meanwhile, we made a comparative analysis of the redware clay in different areas, and it was discovered that the redware clay in Jiangxi and Fujian did not meet with the performance standards of Yixing redware clay.In the third chapter, the redware samples of five periods were analyzed. With EDXRF, XRD,OM and other testing methods, we studied the component model, phase characteristics and microstructure of samples in each period. The formation,evolution law and the inner relationship between physical and chemical properties and the different materials were explored. To explain why redware teapot is the best choice in more scientific and reasonable way, we represented the features of the shape of pores in redware teapot and made a practical performance comparison of tea sets made from different materials. In the fourth chapter,the main points of this paper were summarized.
