The waterborne troops is an important part of the army of Jin dynasty(A.D.1115-1234).Its duty is not only do battle with the army of South Song and Mongulia, but also secure thegrain canal includes Huang River and Royal Qing river and so on.The exercise of this waterborne troops focus on the wars with South Song in early periodand Mongulia in later period. Its duty is changeability, sometime it assaults the enemy,sometime it defends the country.It becomes more powerful within the wars it take part, and italso acquire better warships that are built themselves than looted ones before.The early members of the waterborne troops are the Jurchen who aren’t good at sailingboat. Many people of other nations especially the Han nation are recruited to make this waterforce stronger, because the water war with South Song is more complicated and difficult thanbefore. But, the commanders of this army are Jurchen in most time, for the Jurchen doesn’tfully trust the people of other nations. As a result, the waterborne troops can’t becomepowerful enough to complete its task.The waterborne troops of Jin dynasty had participated in many waterbattle, in which theJiao Xi naval battle was the most well-known one. Wan Yan liang, emperor of Jin dynasty,had built a unprecedented immense shipping to eliminate South Song. But, the sailors of theshipping didn’t want to fight, because Wan Yan liang’s rule was harsh. At last, the shipping ofJin dynasty was wiped out by enemy in the Jiao Xi naval battle.In the later period of Jin dynasty, the defense of Huang River determined the fate of Jindynasty. The regime of Jin dynasty sent many officers to blockade ferries along the HuangRiver. Some city, such as Hezhong prefecture, were also held fast to shield the Huang River.Dushuijian and its dispatched institutions not only make numerous ships to translate grain andequip the waterborne troops, but also protect Huang River themselves. The above-mentionedinstitutions and measures constituted a integrated system to protect the Huang River.
